    How to do a simple Matte Key

    I'm having trouble getting a matte to work. I have 3 elements one is my backround video, the second is my video I want to cut and third is my white matte key with alpha. If someone can show me step by step on how to do this that would be great. I've tried the Help menu in Liquid, but I can't find it.

    Thanks

    No sure about liquid, but in Media Composer it's done like this:

    V1= background video

    V2= fill video for foreground

    V3=stencil white on black for matting

    Place a matte key effect from the effect palette on V3 and you're good to go. You may need to play with invert key and swap sources.

    Create a matte track. Click on the track header of the track you want to matte where the track name is. Add a matte track from the menu and place you matte graphic on that track. That should do it.

    Re: How to do a simple Matte Key

    There is a whole chapter in the PDF manual on track mattes.  Go to Reference Manual : Edit : Special Functions : Matte track and track mattes.

    If you want to use video clips as your matte you must make sure it matches the resolution of the timeline.  If the resolution does not match the matte will not work automatically and you will have to drag the track matte cpu effect to your matte clip.

    For DV projects the matte clips actually have to be 720x486.  That is because of Liquid using 720x480 and 720x486 for the same project.  720x480 clips will work but you will have to add the track matte cpu filter.  Clips at 720x480 with an alpha channel may or may not work.  It really is best to stick to 720x486 for the mattes however because they work 100% of the time for me.  In fact I even encode SD mpeg files as high profile and so I can encode them at 720x486 so they will work as mattes.  Mpeg2 files seem to be the pickiest of all the formats when it comes to working as a matte.  If you keep to the strict standards then you should have no problem.

    Still image mattes seem to not have as many restrictions placed on them.

    Hi,

    I have never really worked with matte and would be very interested to see what you want to archieve and how the "in between" results and the final result looks like.
    Maybe you can explain a little more detail with some files to show what you mean.

    Would be great

    Re: How to do a simple Matte Key

    KBKM,

    What I did is I went into the PDF help menu, page 477 I think and printed out the step by step ways to make a matte. The PDF has pictures so it's really easy to follow. I can't upload from my computer (not allowed), good luck.
