Best way to interchange with Lightworks

Hi all. I'm a past MC user who's now a moderator on the Lightworks forums. I'm trying to help a user there who has an old Lightworks project that needs to be ported across to Media Composer. Lightworks can export XML, AAF, OMF and EDLs, amongst other formats. I have done this in the past using AAF, but that was quite a while ago now. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks, but they offer support for only a limited range of software. I'm hesitant to suggest to the user that I'm trying to help that a solution that isn't designed for Lightworks and that I have no personal experience of is going to sort out their problem.

OK, I getcha--we all want a sure thing. Just out of curiosity, is the AAF that  Lightwave makes using embeded audio & video media? Or would it just be what Avid calls linked media? If you can deal with uploading a zipped folder here (it's an adventure) folks like me could download and try importing it into MC. To see if it generates a usable offline sequence that perhaps could eventually AMA-link to the original Lightwave-imported source files. Or just wait here for an expert...

Well, first, thanks for the offer. Because I don't know the user personally I don't whether they would be interested in making their project available, but I'll ask. Lightworks actually defaults to MC format AAF, but can also output Premier, Resolve and Protools. It also offers quite a range of audio settings, but does not appear currently to offer any video related settings. However I know that there are routinely AAF roundtrips Lightworks to Resolve so I dare say that on the Lightworks forums we'll be getting posts baout that scenario.

You're welcome ! I know nuthin' but perhaps a LW OMF export does audio and SD video? Maybe there's a way in Lightworks to export an SD version of an HD project that gets Imported into MC for tbe AMA-link to sequence. If you have a functioning v7 MC, you might be able to test that out. I forget whether 7 could flip a project Tab from SD to HD. Best of luck, jwrl!

Is the intent to port the entire project? A sequence should be doable, but an entire project would seem impossible to me -- even more so if any of the footage is double-system.

Well, it looks as if the problem has gone away. The user hasn't been back and isn't responding. Thanks for the help guys, but I think that we should lay this one to rest for now.

Hey jwrl, good to see you around! The thing is gone but if it comes back please consider Resolve as an intermediate. You may have to esperiment with different flavours of files out of the Lightworks, aaf and xml mainly, conform in Resolve and output to MC. Sequences only though.

Thanks, luca. I do actually look in most days, but since I've now retired I seldom need to post. Yes, thanks, I know of the Resolve round trip, but since Lightworks is also supposedly capable of exporting AAF to Avid, I really just wanted to find out whether there were any issues. In the past when I still had a valid MC license I would have tested it myself.

Does LW fully support Avid DNxHD and HR exports/imports? It may require an add-on plugin that's not yet supported fully, but that's from a while ago and things are always changing.

Re: Best way to interchange with Lightworks

Back in the day when I had a need to do that sort of interchange Lightworks required a separate DNxHD install. It no longer does.
