Media Composer can't see my DSR-11 DV deck

Media Composer used to work fine with the DSR-11 on my old Windows 7 PC but on the new Windows 11 PC with 2024.2 and a different Firewire card it doesn't. Windows sees the Firewire card and the DSR-11, VirtualDub can capture video from it, but when I go to Deck Configuration in Media Composer it only shows 'no port' under Firewire with no OHCI option. I followed instructions on the site for installing the legacy Firewire driver but it appears that's what it was running when first installed. Any ideas? I looked through settings but didn't see anything OHCI-related. The Firewire card has a TI chipset whereas a lot of people online seem to prefer VIA, but since it works with VirtualDub I presume that's not a problem. I have about 50 DV tapes that I'd like to capture before the DSR-11 dies so I could just use VirtualDub to convert them to .avi and import them but then I probably lose the timecode.

Re: Media Composer can't see my DSR-11 DV deck

I believe Avid (quietly) discontinued support for Firewire after version 2023.3.1.

If you can roll back to that version or earlier, capture should work normally. MC 2022.12.8, for instance, is still available in the downloads area.

Thanks, I'll give that a try!

Re: Media Composer can't see my DSR-11 DV deck

FYI, in the end I had to go back to 2018.12 to find a version that could capture video. 2020.12 was the newest I tried that could see the DSR-11, but it threw an exception every time I tried to capture video. Something in between those two versions might work, but 2018.12 was the newest installer I had which was older than that (which probably means it's the version I was running on Windows 7). Guess I'll capture all the video on 2018.12 and switch back to the latest version when I'm done.

Re: Media Composer can't see my DSR-11 DV deck

Thanks for the info. Glad you found a working solution.

My experience capturing with 2023.3 was on macOS, so I can't speak to why Windows had issues with this version.

Yeah, it's weird. 2022.12 on Windows could see the Firewire card but not the deck. Maybe it's because Firewire has always had proper OS support on Macs whereas it's always been a bit of a kludge on Windows. Thanks again, I'd still be trying to figure out a problem with the card if you hadn't suggested going back to older versions. It's been happily capturing tapes all day since I installed 2018.12.

Re: Media Composer can't see my DSR-11 DV deck

The DSR-11 was the first deck I ever bought, over 20 years ago; great little deck. In those days I captured via a Mojo. These days I only have one deck for legacy HDV and DVcam, the JVC HD BR50. Fortunately that has HDMI out and RS422 deck control, so I capture via an Ultrastudio 4K Mini. It's better than firewire since it has error correction and it scales to DNxHD 1080 very nicely. Maybe OHCI drivers have changed too in Windows, that make firwire play less nicely, with some versions of the now deprecated Firewire capture in Avid.
