    Workstation for Media Composer 22.10

    Hello everyone,

I should buy a workstation to edit small (from 2 minutes to 20 minutes) project in 1080p importing files shooted in 4k H265. I usually link and trascode same as source, same framerate, HQX.

I was looking for HP Z series with Intel Xeon. These cpus have lower frequency than Intel i9 13900k.

    My question is:

Is it better spend 1200 euros for renewed HP Z4 with Xeon W-2123, 64gb ddr4, quadro p2000... Or buy i9 13000k, Motherboard Asus tuf gaming Z790, ddr5 64gb 6000mhz with my old gtx 1060 6gb ram to build a custom pc?

    Thank you all

    Ok, My main edit system:

    - Custom built

    - Ryzen 7 3700x

    - 64GB of Crucial DDR4 RAM running at 3200MHz

    - Nvidia RTX A4000

I would go down the custom build route if I were in your position. It's more affordable to build your own system. But be careful, Your system won't be 'Avid qualified', meaning we can only offer best-effort support.

The most important component in an unqualified setup is its graphics card. Almost any mid/high-level CPU can run Media Composer, but GPUs need qualified drivers to run the latest AI engines well. Script Sync/PhraseFind indexing, Temporal, spatial, colour encoding adapters, some effects including colour grades, and UME transcoding/exporting are all GPU accelerated.

For serious editing, you should have 32GB of RAM minimum, and 64GB recommended. This means you can set a higher media cache/video memory so more frames can be cached to RAM instead of constantly reprocessing.
