Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

    Hey Nims.....

Chris passed this along to our QA lead and he indicates that overall that is a very dangerous blanket recommendation to make.

Those files you mention are the project and settings files.

As we know corruption can occur, we would ONLY recommend deleting those files in a case by case basis and not associate this with BMD issues. Something else was going on.....

    Nims:

    Thank you Marianna,

Just FYI, it was under a different username and account that I was told the crashing upon quit is related to the BMD driver. Happy to share that account info privately.

Please do and send that to my email... :)

    Thanks so much.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

    Hi everyone,

I'm Josh, one of the the engineers who's been looking into this issue. Currently I'm testing this with an M2 Studio 32GB  OS13.6.1, Ultrastudio 4k mini v12.8.1.

I've been trying to reproduce these issues here in Burlington for a few weeks and I'm just not running into anything like you're all talking about. I'm hoping the devil is in the details on this one and that maybe I'm just missing some crucial bit of info that's being taken for granted. Can I start by asking those of you who are experiencing the beachballs/hangs to give me details on your project and media types and perhaps a summary of your workflow? No detail is too small but I'm really looking for things like settings, timeline mode, scrub, effects and things like that which really impact the player. If anyone is willing to provide actual media in the form of full projects, user and media that would be particularly enlightening.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

    Hi Josh,

Editing short scenes, a couple minutes long, is doable, not many crashes.Though JKL control though and trim is not as good as it used to be. Often short audio dips at the very start of playback, sometimes with a short annoying left-right change (even with centered tracks).

Pressing JK of KL for slow p/b makes the sequence jump a few frames, it is not fluent. The same project, same media, same MC 2024.2 on a windows workstation with a similar DNxIQ connected, works without any problems. Smooth JKL operation and trim. Editing long sequences, 20’ or longer, is impossible with DNxIQ connected. Many spinning beachballs during the day, force quit is necessary. These crashes seem to appear randomly.  It is very difficult to find a pattern. We experimented a lot with media cache settings: p/b video frame cache on or off, or default settings, or little or lots of memory asssigned. We could not find any coherence. Also 'toggle play length' did not help.  Straight forward playback of a long sequence causes a hiccup after a some time, and the sequence continues to play out of sync. This also happens with renderd clips and should be easy to reproduce as a test. There is a big difference in behavior when editing short or long sequences. We could not find any version of MC (with Avid DNxIQ) to work on Apple Silicon. For a long time during the existence of this bug, we heard that the BMD driver was to blame. BMD version 12.8.1 was better on first sight but we ran into the same severe problems while editing longer sequences. We were advised by avid support to try AJA instead of Avid DNxIQ. So we tried T-Tap Pro (with only 1 SDI output…) with MC 2024.2 and AJA Control 16.2.5 and also AJA Control 17.0.1. Playback is impossible, lots of hiccups, stutter. The image freezes in reverse p/b. Please note that AJA T-Tap HD does work with MC 2023.3 with little issues! Just sometimes a frame drop at the start of p/b. Hardly any spinning beach balls. Something changed after MC 2023.3 which makes AJA I/O incompatible. Because of the problems with Avids own DNxIQ we rolled back to MC 2023.3 on MacStudio Ultra and are now using this tiny T-Tap for the client monitor. Avid’s own DNxIQ is not malfunctioning with apple Silicon (and functioning excellent on a windows hp workstation). Please let me know if you need more info. I sincerely do hope this will be fixed, we prefer an apple M1, 2 or 3 cpu rather than windows but have serious thoughts about returning to windows because of the lack of support from avid with their own DNxIQ (or other I/O hardware). Would it help your research if we sent you a complete project folder? specs MacStudio M1 Ultra Mac OS Ventura 13.3 128GB Memory Media on M2 Raid and striped hard disks connected by thunderbolt Media Composer 2024.2 Avid DNxIQ connected by thunderbolt BMD driver 12.8.1 plugins: boris fx / mocha / izotope Current Project:  Video: XAVC 4K Intra Class 480 (3840x2160) Audio: 48 kHz, 24 bit Format: UHD 1/4 frame (most of the time) or UHD 25p Timeline: 3 videotracks mostly rendered to DNxHR LB 26 audio tracks (18 mono + 8 stereo) with some audio suite fx Previous Project with the same problems: Video: XAVC 4K Intra Class 300 (4096x2160) Audio: 48 kHz, 24 bit (sync clips) and 44.1 kHz 16 bit (score), mixed sample rates in timeline Format: HD @ 25p Timeline: 4 videotracks mostly rendered to DNxHR LB 26 audio tracks (18 mono + 8 stereo) with some audio suite fx Also rendered clips and mix downs (DNxHR LB or DNxHR SQ or ProRes ) experience the same problems.

Hi Josh, I can't speak first hand for Mac; but there definitely seems to be an issue with DV 12.9, across both platforms, that hasn't been acknowledged yet by BMD; in my case with an Ultrastudio 4K Mini (and perhaps the same with the DNxID) it actually bricks the device (this I have seen on both PC and Mac); and I'm seeing both Ultrastudios and Decklinks (but not all) totally unrecognised (but not bricked) by Desktop Video; across both platforms. Reverting to 12.8.1 (with a forced firmware update, where bricked), solves the issue; again on both platforms. I don't know if this is of any help to you.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

    M1 compatibility solved !!!

Up to now, the only stable version of Avid that worked on my M1 Studio Max 32Gb ram was 2022.7. All of the newer versions gave a spinning beachball after a few minutes of editing.

Imagine my surprise when I updated my system to Sonoma, and retried 2024.2. I've been working for days now without a crash.

    Avid 2024.2

    BMD 12.9

    Sonoma 14.4.1

    So happy !!!

    Hi Euchrow,

Is your combination (M1 + Sonoma + MC 2024.2 + BMD 1.8.1) still stable and fully functioning?

Are you editing short or long (above 20') sequences?

Curious what the state of this issue is right now?  I'm on Media Composer 2022.12.3 and using Desktop Video 12.4.2 and it's been a huge pain for me.  Lots of performance/playback problems that I've just put up with for ages.

Are things any better on Desktop Video 12.8.1, 12.9, or 14.0.1?

I'm on Mac Studio M1 Ultra with Ventura 13.4.1.

I too would appreciate an update regarding the issues with Avid MC and Blackmagic I/O components. I'm on a Mac Studio M2 and Ventura 13.5 with Desktop Video 12.4.2 and have not been working without issues for a full year. Do any of the new released versions fix the problem?

    Same,

I have M1 Studio and BM card with AVID is unusable, waiting for this issue to be resolved probably as long as this topic exists. I don't understand how this can be an issue for so long.

It's super frustrating, even more so when I work in davinci and see how fluent and fast this combination works.

    Hello both,

    Please send me an email...

Seems like some users are still stuck with this issue, but most aren't. I would like to figure out what's going on here.

Thank you for messages, it really helped us after a year of struggle with Mac Studio M2 Max, Ventura, and Blackmagic. Sonoma seems to really do the trick, it all feels much more stable now (latest Sonoma, Avid 24.2, BMD 12.8.1).
