Hi,
(I am a uni student and have been guided to colour grade this way)
I am colour grading in da vinic on pro res files. The colour space in Avid is YCbCr 709 and the davinci cst is redcolor2-redlogfilm-rec709-gamma2.4.
When colour grading these files in da vinci they look how I want them to look and how I have graded them, then I generate them as 33 point luts and import them into avid and they end up looking completely different to how I have graded them. I don't know where I have gone wrong in this colour grading process.
Any guidance/help is appreciated.
Hi there,
What exactly is your workflow?
My online to offline resolve workflow is:
Transcode in Resolve > Offline Edit in Avid > Conform to Resolve > Online edit and Colour in Resolve > Deliverables
I've simplified a lot of it
Editing Movie Magic.
My Equipment & System Specs
Media Composer Ultimate 2022.12.2 | Pro Tools Studio 2022.21 | Sibelius Artist 2022.12
Also note the source monitor, record monitor and fullscreen display in Media Composer default to showing Rec 709 legal files without any LUT that corrects for the difference between the color space of the footage (Rec709 legal) and your computer displays (usually sRGB). You can adjust this by right-clicking the source/record monitor and choosing the right Target Display Color Space -- or in FullScreen Display Settings, choose the right Target Display Color Space from the dropdown menu.
Color in MC is most accurate when using an I/O device driving a Rec709 calibrated video monitor.

This is confusing to me. Are you trying to import a LUT into Avid and use that on top of the ungraded material?
That is not really the best way to go about the process for a variety of reasons.
The normal path is:
1. Source footage as a sequence from Avid into Resolve.
2. Color grade and export new media from Resolve.
3. If needed, bring back to Avid for any finishing that can not be accomplised in Resolve.

It's also worth remembering that LUTS have limitations on export - so you cannot export things like Power Windows, blurs and keying operations within a LUT.
