Hi Community,
please solve this problem:
We are two video editors, A and B, working separately on two different pc (windows) from two different places. Our boss sent us one .mp4 video by email. Both editors have downloaded and imported (trancoded - not linked-) the mp4 to our pc, into a different project we work on (A-project and B-project) and different bin (A-edits and B-edits), beacuse ok, we're running other projects also. So, Me, the A-editor, into my A-project, I created a sequence into the A-edits Bin with some edits and desolves. Then I e-mailed the "A-edits" bin file (.avb) to the B-editor. He opened the "A-edits" bin file (.avb) into his B-project and... imagine... everything Offline Media.
What's wrong with the whole procedure? What is the correct procedure?
I will reaaaaly appreciate your answers.
Has your B-side tried a Batch Import of that identical MP4? See if that cuts the mustard.

Yours references YOUR transcoded file. He needs that same transcoded file too to match the bin info? Try relinking (we live in hope) as if there is enough and the right metadata selected it may relink. AMA linking to same file would have workled - but the transcoded file is different and new. I think!
Ultimate 2022.12.1, Blackmagic Intensity Pro, WIN 11 on 7000Mbps M.2 SSD, Nvidia Quadro P4000, Asus Pro Art Z690 i9 12900k 5.0 GHz, 8TB M.2 SSD - its nippy!
Yes, but this method triggers transcoding again, like the mp4 is a new file, so time spending... And we dont want that since the B-side already have transcoded when recieved the orgiginal mp4 file from the boss.
I have often wondered what would happen if I lost my "must transcode" imported .mxf files and needed to re-visit a project that used them. This is a similar scenario, but with your B collaborator missing the identical .mxfs.
If you Export an AAF with media, of just your edited sequence, is that completed file-size reasonable for internet uploading to a file-share service? That ought to work.
I don't have much experience with Relink tool, but it *may* be possible to Force a Relink of the transcoded B masterclip to your A edited sequence. Ask B to send you a bin with the transcoded masterclip. I think there may be a Relink option to permit Relink to "Offline" clips-- but I have never tried it... B's masterclip would probably need to have the exact same Name, Starting TC, DF/NDF status and Duration as the A clip used by you for editing.
Someone else here may know if this idea can work-- or if it is preposterous.
Telegram's suggestion has a good chance of working if you highlight the source clip in one bin, then in a different bin right click on the sequence and choose Selected items in ALL open bins. Use Tape Name or Source File Name (instead of Source Name or Source File ID). This assumes both copies of e transcoded clips have the same Name in your bin.
Linking then transcoding would have been a better way to handle it.
Personally I'd have A (or B) editor import the source file (well actually I'd AMA link and then transcode)
I'd then send the bin and the transcoded media to the other editor. you are both working off the same AVid media derived from the same source file.
If the transcoded media is lost then you batch re-import (if imported YUK) or just link again and transcode.

If it works, it does seem to be the fastest way to get A's sequence online on B's computer.
I'm also wondering if the two MC Projects needed to be identically named for a Relink to work...?
The fact that you both transcoded the same source file into your boxes is irrelevant. As far as the two Avids are concerned, those files may was well be night and day from each other. The media created by Avid A is never going to be the same file names as the media on Avid B.
The correct workflow for this would be to have Avid A do all the transcoding, and then copy that footage over to B. At that point you can email bins back and forth to your hearts content.
With some greather knowledge of the relink settings, I'm betting you could get the relink option to work, but you would need to go into the section about relinking media where the source is different.
Look at the info in Edit As bin, and the info in Edit B's bin, and see what items share the same information. Probably reel id or tape id or tape name, ore something like that.
It is also a possibility to edit a column in the bin to help with a relink process, but honestly, unless this is an absolute beast of a file, i would just upload or copy the media across and move on.
DONE IT
From a combination of all your responses and some experiments, this is what worked:
I sent the A-bin to B-editor. B-editor opened it and saw one Sequence and one video file ("A-file"). Simultaneously, B-editor had opened his B-bin with only one file inside, the video file "B-file" (remind, already transcoded into his pc). Then,
1. B-editor renames his "B-file" (which is in his B-bin) into "A-file" (exactly as it was mine) and keeps it highlighted,
2. goes back to A-bin and selects the sequencse, right click and Relink,
3. Chooses "selected items in all OPEN bins"
4. Relink by... Timecode: Start, Source Name: NAME (the most important! not "Tape name or source file Id/name" but just "Name"). Check "ignore extension", uncheck match case when comparing source names. Finally check all others (tracks to relink video-audio-data, create new sequence, allow relink across rates) and OK!
YES All OK !!! Thank God we don't need to send million o GBs to each other!
Tested Tip: When a sequence has more than one clips, should be highlighted all of these (from the relative bins), make sure they have exactly the same name (as they are appeared in original sequence) and then proceed to Relink etc. I wanna thank you all for your help!

You are welcome and happy Relinking...i was curious which versions you were on.
Also, will "B" be sending you ("A"), bins containing edited Sequences as well?
