Hi everyone. This is HUGE news, and a very long time coming.
Effective immediately, under the new Media Composer for Students program, learning institutions can sign up as entry-level Avid Learning Affiliates at www.avid.com/media-composer/for-students. This is an answer to the growiug number of new talent who have been entering the marketplace without any skills in Avid Media Composer. It is designed to ensure that students will gain hands-on experience with the media & entertainment industry’s requisite editing tool.
If an educational institution wants to participate, they sign up with our Afficiate program - for free... And then get to deploy licenses of Media Composer to its students - also for free.
This is not a trial or a light version, but the full Media Composer Standard version.

Hi,
I recently signed our institution up to the programme. I've added some users and allocated licenses. However, the users don't receive the required email with their license key, or any email for that matter.
I've checked with our IT and our system isn't blocking anything coming from AVID.
Any help is much appreciated
Ray

Thanks Ray, I replied to your email.

I'm having an issue with getting my copy of the free student Avid.
- Previously I purchased a 1 year license on 7th March as I needed to use Avid at home for a few days. But then subsequently Avid released the free version. So I wanted to sign up.
- My school has joined the scheme.
- My school admin has assigned me a copy.
- I got the email and followed the links.
- I sent my proof to the 3rd party to verifiy my status (I have also emailed them and they have double checked to confirm this).
- Now when I login to my account i can see my purchased license in 'my products' but I cannot see the new free student subscription in 'my products'. Speaking to other students they can see the new free version in their products, with a System ID, etc.
- Avid supoort agreed to cancel my paid subscription as a one off favour in this instance. But I can't do it until I have the system ID info etc for my new free subscription.
- I've been speaking to Avid support for days and they've been unhelpful. So they pointed me here for assitance.
What can I do?
Andy
Hello Andy,
I replied to one of your opened case. I need your School Admin email. Thanks!

I registered my institution in the program and assigned some individual licenses to some students. But I would like to ask if I can use this program for the classrooms. I asked avid representatives but with no clear answer, perhaps I didn’t explain myself correctly.
Currently, my university has three classrooms with 60-70 seats. Each seat has a local PC with media composer (though they are floating licenses, so they are kept on a server). We still use these licenses as they are perpetual, but we cannot actualize the software version. So the question is: Can we use the Avid for students program to install new versions of Media Composer in the classroom seats?
If I understood Avid representatives, they said we could, but they may have suggested we link each seat with an individual student license. This is highly impractical, because there are thousands of students and they rotate all the time, so we would have to assign an unassign each seat continuously. In addition, many of them are unlikely to enroll in the program, but are still required to learn and practice their editing skills in the avid classrooms.
Is there any other solution?
Thank you very much.
SAIT, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, teaches both Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools in our Film and Video Program as well as the Radio, Broadcast, Television program. In FVP we have our classrooms and labs connected to an Avid NEXIS with 800TB. The classroom computers all have floating licences for Media Composer Ultimate and the equivalent of Pro Tools (dammit Jim, I'm a motion picture editor, not a sound guy); that we do not want to change. The students have requested we sign SAIT up for this program, however...When I click on the "request to have our school participate" link it creates an email "ready to send" except without a "To" email address. What email address should this request be sent to?
Thanks,
Duane Martin, FVP instructor at SAIT

Thank you for reaching out! Avid's web team is aware of the issue with the registration link and is in the process of updating the page. You can apply to the program here: https://my.avid.com/get/EduTeamsAffiliate/4935-00221-00/Index
Please sign up with your institutional email address. You will be asked to verify your status as a teacher, after which you’ll be granted access to a Media Composer team license with 50 licenses to distribute to your students. More licenses will be available by request, using the 'Get More' button within the Team Admin interface.
Cheers!Bryan

Can we use the Avid for students program to install new versions of Media Composer in the classroom seats? That would be great because my institution is a public one with little to no budget to renew their old perpetual licenses.
Thanks.

The Media Composer for Student program does provide the latest version of the software.
The Team license is not designed to support classrooms, for exactly the reasons you have identified. Licenses from the Media Composer Team are assigned to individual users by way of their email address. For classroom licenses, Avid offers discounts on Media Composer Ultimate for educational institutions -- approx $100/yr USD instead of retail price of $539/yr USD.
Hope that helps!
Thank you. It surely helps to get the information. May I write to you privately to ask about perpetual licenses and more?
Sure, no problem! [email protected]
