I'm an amateur editor who wants to turn pro. I want to spend all my time learning and mastering Avid to pursue editing full-time as a career.
What has always kept me from pursuing it is the lack of decent hardware. It's like I'm trying to bake (edit) a wedding cake with an EZ bake oven. Editing is the easy part. I find 90 percent of the stress comes from MacGyvering a project from crashing, as well as the anxiety of just looking over fresh footage. Somehow I manage to do it, but it's frustrating.
Wanting to take the big leap into Avid, I've soon hit the first roadblock: what kind of rig should I get?
After much deliberation and headbanging, I've settled upon 2 computers, both of which are certified Avid rigs: the Lenovo P620 and the Lenovo P720. Avid future recommendations also suggest these systems. Both are certified avid rigs. Lenovo p620 avid configuration guidelines Lenovo p720 avid configuation guidelineAvid future recogmendations
I can get a Lenovo P720 refurbished and fully loaded for about $1,953, or a brand new P620 for the same price. The latter seems too good to be true, so please look for yourselves at https://pcserverandparts.com/build-your-own-custom-lenovo-thinkstation-p720-workstation-2-processors/.
The Lenovo P720 comes with 2x (2.10 GHz) 24-Core Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 Processors, 128GB (8x16GB) DDR4 PC4 R Memory (need to check the speed), 2TB SSD SATA 2.5" NEW for primary storage, 1TB M.2 SSD NVMe Drive (plus adapter) for M.2 storage, 1TB M.2 SSD NVMe Drive (plus adapter) for secondary M.2 storage, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 8GB GDDR6 graphics card, and Windows 11 Professional operating system. It's a neat consumer-grade graphics card to play with and has all the RAM I could eat with great storage options. Pro: it's decked out, but it could blow up/malfunction.
On the other hand, the Lenovo P620 also seems an excellent choice for $2,000, but it comes with Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5945WX, NVIDIA T1000 8GB GDDR6, 32GB DDR4 16x2, and 1T. The P620 is new, so it's less likely to malfunction and has the same amount of room for upgrade. However, I've never messed with professional cards like the Nvidia T1000 so I'd like to hear from you guys!
Hi Eric.
Checking Revision F for the p620

Looks like the nVidia T1000 is not supported by Avid; the RTX400 is about double its price.
If you are ready to do the investment, I would go for a supported model, then follow the rule of higher clock CPU and RAM you can afford within the performance recommendation (in red)
The higher the number of Xeon CPUs the better too... always within your budget.
Regardin refurbished or new, is the seller of your trust? How old is the workstation? Any warranty?
Hope this helps!
Cheers
Diego
