So... I have AVID Artist DNxIO & DNxIQ units that I use on our Mac Avid MC Systems, they work fine
with Avids Driver on an Avid System. [got the Avid 12.4 mac driver from the avid DL center @ https://my.avid.com/esd/Product/Download/2674]
These 2019 Mac Pros [192g ram] are on Catalina/Big Sur/Monterey with MC 2021.3 - 10 on Nexis or Facilis
Now I want add DaVinci Resolve on some of the same 2019 Mac Pros with an Avid Artist DNxIO/IQ
PROBLEM:
I want to connect an AVID Artist DNxIO or IQ to a DaVinci Resolve System.
[The Avid Artist DNxIO/IQ does NOT seem to work on the DaVinci Resolve System
with the affore mentioned driver from Avid https://my.avid.com/esd/Product/Download/2674]
I assume the AVID Artist DNxIO/IQ requires uninstalling the Avid version DeskTop Video driver and
then installing the BMD DeskTop Video Driver version from BlackMagic Design site?
So that would be BMD's driver for BMD DR... but using an Avid Branded Avid Artist DNxIO/IQ
So... I went to [https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/capture-and-playback] and
DL'd the BMD 12.4.2 driver to use with the Avid Artist DNxIO/IQ on BMD DR 18.1 and still no luck.
I have allowed access in Security & Privacy etc etc after uninstall and reinstall of the driver.
I poked around in Library/Extnesions and Stage Extensions and am wondering what I should see?
Anyway... will a Avid Artist DNxIO/IQ [made by BlackMagic Design for Avid] work on a
BlackMagic Design DaVinci Resolve System? I cant seem to get it to work?
Does Avid have its own FW that only allows its AVID Artist DNxIO/IQ to work on Avid SW?
Any steps, processes or ideas?
Thanks
DJ
Yes, it will work. We have been using it for years on systems with MC, Resolve and Premiere. When you install the latest drivers, it may require a firmware update.

Hey Dom, I cant get an Avid Artist DNxIO or IQ to work or a Davinci Resolve system at all! I can see the DNxIO with DeskTop Video driver 12.8.1 [most current]. I can see the DNxIO in EBS if I choose it for use with Evercast Streaming, I can see the DNxIO in DaVinci Resolve preferences... but it does not actually work with Resolve. My macOS Library/Extensions has the DeckLink_Driver.kext and the Library/Staged Extensions/Library/Extensions has Blackmagicio.kext, BlackmagicUsvIO.kext and DeckLink.kext but I cant get the Avid Artist DNxIO to work with Resolve. Any Ideas?
What does Resolve preferences say for Video I/O?
What OS version are you using? TB or PCIe HIB card?
Hey Dom!
Wow thanks for the fast reponse!
So... I have a 2019 mac pro 7,1 on macOS Monterey 12.7.4 with 96 gigs of ram [pix attached]
It has a TB3 attached ATTO NS 3102 connected to the Nexis F series mirrored storage.
I am using DaVinci Resolve 18.5 [could update to 18.6.6 but havent]
Apple Menu / About this mac / TB/USB4 sees the Artist DNxIO [pix attached]
BMD DeskTop Video Driver 12.8.1 [most current] sees the Artist DNxIO [pix attached]
Im using genuine apple cables & adapters to the DnxIO [TB3 -> TB2 then TB2 1m cable to DNxIO]
Evercast EBS even sees the DNxIO as a viable option
DaVinci Resolve Video IO prefs sees the Artist DNxIO [pix attached]
macHD/Library/Extensions has DeckLink_Driver.kext [loaded]
macHD/Library/StagedExtensions/Library?Extensions has the following:
Blackmagic_Multibridge_Driver.kext [loaded]
BlackmagicIO.kext [loaded]
BlackmagicUsbIO.kext [loaded]
DeckLink_Driver.kext [loaded]
BUT... I still cant get any V&A out of the Avid Artist DNxIO on DaVinci Resolve
You have an Avid Artist DNxIO connected to DaVinci Resolve at your facility?
So all applicaitons can utilize the DNxIO but Resolve?
I assume you are not running any other app other than Resolve? BM drivers do not like when two apps have access to the hardware simultaneously.
Do you have Resolve set to Single SDI mode in project settings?
10 bit mode?
I assume 4K or lower?
30 fps or lower if 4k?
I Really appreciate the help Dom!
where is 'single sdi mode' in resolve perfs?
So I do have AVID 2023.8 installed on this machine as well as BMD 18.5
but I do NOT run them simo, actually only run Resolve on this machine and could unitnstall Avid?
IDK if AVID SW throws anything off [plist/ or prefs like .com.apple.XXX etc]
Im really wondering if the Extensions have to be the same as the Staged Extensions as well?
what are the extensions and staged extensions you have in Library?
Additionally EBS, AJA UTAP, macOS and BMD Resolve all "see/recognize" the DNxIO as available, but
I can not see Resolve Video & Audio through any of these devices... just a full white screen or
sometimes a black screen with what looks like a sync shift or somehting.
Sheesh... I thought this would be plug n play BMD HW on BMD SW.
Got any other ideas?
OK. As long as no other app that requires access to the DNxIO is running you are fine. You can leave it installed.
The setting is in PRoject Settings -> Master Settings -> Video Monitoring -> SDI configuration
Set that to Single and NOT Dual or Quad.
(Quad is required if you are transmitting 4K and the monitor only supports 3G x 4).
Ah... OK SDI Configuration in BMD settings.
yeah I am all low res/low BW so I did have that checked. [see attached]
I am 3G single link 422 stuff, no dual link 444 or quad link 4444 stuff.
I do not think AVID flashes any AVID FW on the FPGA's of the DNxIO so I dont think thats the issue
but I have noticed that the DNxIO did NOT ask for the BMD FW upgrade when I moved up to 12.8.1?
When you use the DNxIO on an Avid and you step up in MC version or actually up in
BMD Desktop Video Driver version it ususally says "update FW, unplug & power cycle unit"
it has NOT asked for that when I went up to 12.8.1 DTVideo driver?
Is there a tool to force an update on the DNxIO?
Ill try and look at it more on Monday, Thanks again Dom!
On Windows, there is a background utility that checks the firmware and initiates an upgrade if needed. Let me check on MacOS. I assume there is one also.
Hey Dom
Still giving this a go. Tried some other options with a friend Tommy, but we still are not getting it.
We uninstalled BMD 12.8.1 driver and used most compatible driver with macOS Monterey 12.7.4
We then remove the AJA UTAP and looped the DNxIO sdi out to the SDI IN.
We then tested the DNxIO, the 2m apple TB2 cable, the mac TB3 port, the apple TB3->TB2
adapter to the DNxIO and it all plays fine on AVID MC 2023.8 via the HDMI out to a monitor.
We then went back to Resolve with the same known working BMD Driver 12.7.4 & cabling...
but no luck. checked all the BMD settings prefs/V&A IO/cap device: Avid Artist DNxIO/monitor device:
Avid Artist DNxIO. Gear/cap&pb/sdi config: single link. Gear/master setts/video mon: use levelA 3g dsi/
sdi config: single link. So I feel like I have all the settings in BMD correct, I feel likle I have tested the
mac/macOS/TB ports & cables/BMD driver version/DNxIO HW itself as functional/& DNxIO connections
Any other ideas
Just tested on an DNxIO, Apple TB3 to TB2 connected iMac Pro, Monterey 12.7.4, Resolve 18.6 and BM drivers 12.4.2.
It works.
AVID Artist DNxIO on BMD DaVinci Resolve
Comes down to proper version of BMD DeskTop Video Driver for your macOS
And some settings in BMD Resolve
Also use Apple Certified cables and adapters, no 3rd party stuff
I also ran a loopback SDI cable from the DNxIO SDI OUT to the DNxIO SDI IN
1. Use proper BMD DeskTop Video driver for you macOS [see BlackMagic Design website for compatibility]
I had installed most current BMD DeskTop Video driver 12.8.1 which did NOT work
I needed a lower version compatible with my macOS Monterey 12.7.4 [which was BMD DTV 12.7.1]
2. BMD DaVinci Resolve Preferences
DaVinci Resolve / Preferences / System Tab / Video & Audio IO / Capture Device / AVID Artist DNxIO
DaVinci Resolve / Preferences / System Tab / Video & Audio IO / Monitor Device / AVID Artist DNxIO
DaVinci Resolve / Preferences / System Tab / Audio IO / IO Engine / Desktop [for Evercast / Clearview]
3. BMD DaVinci Resolve Project Settings [Gear Icon]
Master Settings / Video monitoring / SDI Configuration / Single Link
Master Settings / Video monitoring / SDI Configuration / Use Level A for 3Gb SDI
this setting seems to be different from the BMD DesKTop Video Driver setting of Level B, but works. DaVinci Resolve calls for Level A, DeskTop Video Driver defaults to Level B ‘normal’, but works.
4. For Evercast and its use of EBS with the DNxIO be sure to use the proper/current version of EBS for your macOS
In EBS / Sources / “+” / BlackMagic Device
For the Device / Avid Artist DNxIO /
For the Video Connection / SDI
For the Audio Connection / Embedded
Also select the ‘use buffering’ check box
You can also step on the encoding a bit from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 and use 30fps rather than 60fps
also can drop the audio bit rate from 320 to 192 and a few other tweaks if you use EC
Thanks Dom & Tommy for sticking this out with me!
Thanks for your efforts Dom!
I re-worked everything and got it going too!
I appreciate your suppport!
