I'm using MC Ultimate 2021.9 with an Artist box, on a dual monitor setup. I cannot figure out how to have my workspace come back to what's been saved. The timeline and bin sizes and placements come back randomly when re-opening a project even when calling up a workspace setting. Is this a two monitor thing, workspaces not saving right or something I've got on or not turned on. I make changes and keep selecting "save current" but it doesn't matter. I clicked on restore to default and remade a new setting without success. Appreciate any suggestions.

You could try creating a custom workspace instead of "saving current" an existing workspace. If that does not work re-set your Avid User Settings.

Hi Brian,
I feel your pain because I am also facing this extremely annoying issue. According to what I remember, it all started when the new user interface got introduced (2019.xx). That's more than two years ago. I already created a post about this on February 9, 2020 when I installed 2019.12 on a fresh machine. Back then my two screens got squeezed into the one on the left.
When I now start Media Composer the Bin window completely takes over my two monitors. Some windows are even lost somewhere in space outside (below or above) the actual screen view.
Last year a support case was created for this, and I was suggested to create a new user profile. This worked for a few days and then everything got screwed up again like before. Customizing and saving the default workspaces doesn't work, and creating brand new custom workspaces neither.
Do you also have some settings windows that are not displaying the text correctly? Where the text that is chopped off on the underside? I am using two Dell UltraSharp U2720Q 4K displays. What are you using if I may ask?
My thought was that it had something to do with the higher resolution (4K) screens, but I just saw when digging through my older posts that it also already appeared with my previous Eizo FlexScan S2432W-GY screens that have a 1920x1200 (HD) resolution.
I have a workaround for this, but it's not energy and environment friendly. I keep my machine running 24/7 and don't close Avid anymore. Yeah, I know it's a dumb solution. But in the end it works (for me)!

Text cut off:
Whenever you change a workspace, you need to save that workspace. At the bottom of the workspace panel there is a small triangle. Click on that and choose Save Current. You can also create a custom workspace and name it what you like. That also shows up in the list.

I have reported this issue before.
Avid 2021.12 works better.
Zb.
I would like to add that the Color Correction Mode icon is not working properly all the time. Its use completely devastates workspaces.
Yes, I feel the pain on this issue, multiple times every day! It's so frustrating even creating a new bin and having to slide the folders window away EVERY time. My hope is that while appeasing the Premiere group of users, they create a button to allow the Avid to create floating bins the way it always used to. Calling it a great new feature... not so much ;)
Yes, I can also feel the pain on this issue.
Still the same issue here. It happens on a regular base. I reported the issue here a few times: “Switching between workspaces, settings don't stick“. I am nearly always on the newest version of MC (2021.12), always hoping that the issue is fixed. Still waiting!!!
I am on a dual monitor (4k) setup. Especially switching to the Color Correction Mode is an adventure: sometimes working, sometimes mixing everything. Then the system is unusable because there is no Color correction window. Sometimes it helps to do “restore to saved”, sometimes this makes it even worse. New user setting also does not solve the problem.
My new workaround: I save the user setting on a different drive as a backup. Whenever everything is mixed I close MC and copy this backup to c:\users\Public\... This helps sometimes for a few hours.
For me, the situation has stabilized in such a way that I have defined new workspaces on the Workspaces bar. Each of them Save as current. For example CC, Effect etc. And under no circumstances do I touch them because different things are happening.I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TOUCH THE "COLOR CORRECTION MODE" ICON.And time passes while we wait for the problem to be solved.Elsewhere in the forum I reported that exports are not working.

I am having a similar issue and it is really starting to annoy me.
I cycle between dual screen and single screen layouts depending on in office or remote work.
Whenever you switch back to single screen, dual screen layout gets broken and you have to redo everything, even if you "save current" it still does not revert to original built layout.
Resetting user settings is also not a way forward becuase it takes so much time to get back all your settings and tool shortcuts.
My opinion, the workspaces are not designed for custom layout and dual screen is still very much an issue for Avid.
The different tabs take multiple tries to snap together and just muddies the Avid experience.
It should just work, without resetting, without constant rebuilding of workspaces.
Adding to that - the host panels also goes out the window when you swith to a single screen layout and back to dual screen.
Brendan Holtshousen: It should just work, without resetting, without constant rebuilding of workspaces.
I have no issues with my 3 GUI screen setup, but that always stays on one version, and I never move between 2 to 3 monitors.
The "host panel" setting might help you though, You can find it under windows > host panels. You might have more luck if all your screens are host panels rather than big floating windows? Just a guess.
Just to make sure though, have you tried re-setting user and site settings? Although It's not ideal that we have to keep doing this, it does work for the short term. The long term fix is on Avid's side - It's a bug. I've escalated this thread - we'll see what happens.
This is a big PITA
Here is my 2 cents
This is what I seem to have found out from lots of frustrating experimentation :
The multiple screen layout as you set it define it in Windows Display Settings has to remain locked and stay locked and not be fiddled with.
If you have a multi-screen set up - the Windows display settings have to be excatly as they were when the workspace was saved - any deviation - a monitor not powered on / a screen position moved or even slightly nudged up or down - a different resolution etc. then your MC workspaces will "reset" to a manic default sort of layout that makes no logical sense (maybe it is an AI powered setup)
It would be nice to be able to lock the screen display settings in Windows rather than having Windows just remember them.
So my workaround is to
1. set up the display settings (monitors) in Windows display settings as I need them
2. Make sure all required monitors are on and correctly set before I start MC
3. Open MC and set my workspaces and save them accordingly (multiple times using all the available save workspace options)
4. Then when ready close MC
5. Each time I start MC I make sure all the monitros are on - the screens are properly postioned and everything is as it was when worksapces were saved
6. Start MC and hope the workspaces keep their layout - they generally do if you have changed nothing! (breathe a sigh of relief)
I wiill absolutely not start MC without having all screens set properly and on - which means MC on my laptop is essentially anchored to my editing station and I cannot use MC on my laptop anywhere else - unless I am prepared to set up the worksapces again - for single screen laptop editing and then again when all screens are connected again.
Thanks

And you can't for example create a new laptop workspace for editing on one screen, then another workspace for your studio setup? Will the windows display settings still interfere?
I have tried to do this briefly with limited success and frankly it is too much effort - it seems to me that there are too many variables and if even the smallest one goes out MC workspaces will rever to some dystopan nightmare and they are a pain to reorganise, test and the reorganise again. (Sometimes I dont even know why it reverted)
Here is the thing though - if not editing in 4k (which my old desktop struggles with) Media Composer is still very performant on my desktop and it is absolutely fine to work with - so I am using my new Alder Lake / Ti3070 laptop for Adobe AE and Premier pro and my desktop for MC - and I can switch between the 2 quite easily - Adobe products seem to need more resources to do the same thing.
The only risk is that MC releases a resoource intensive update or my oldish desktop dies in which case given the workspace overhead and annoyance I may prefer to do all editing in Adobe products and not renew my MC license.
I do prefer the Adobe approach - mercury playback engine - to Avid's workspace solution - it simply is too unpredictable to get right
But I do prefer editing on MC which I can still do at the moment.
I know downgrading to a legacy version isn't ideal at all, but try to load up 2018 on your system and see if that can do what you want? If it does, stick with it until I get Avid to sort this out.
