Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

I've submitted this case to support but maybe the forum will have a suggestion.

Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone, neither to bin nor to MXF media folder. When record button in Punch-in Tool is pressed, I can see a "creating" file appear in the "Creating" folder of my media drive path "Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1" but when I click the Stop button in the Punch-in tool, the "creating" file disappears. I see these two lines appear in the console when attempting to record with Punch-in tool for the first time:

    Reloading plugin: AudioCodecManager.avx

    Reloading plugin: CMAvidMPEG1Layer2AudioCodec.avx

Encountered issue on version 2021.5 on High Sierra.   Upgraded to 2021.6, problem persists.

Audio levels not appearing in meters in Avid application.

Audio levels do appear in System Preferences / Sound / Input tab.

Zapped PRAM, problem persists, but iMac screen is now much brighter.

Re: Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

I can't reproduce this on my own system - although I'm using Mojave rather than High Sierra. My USB mic works fine.

A shot in the dark though - the error seems to imply that Media Composer is either trying to create MP2 audio insead of PCM, or that it's getting MP2 audio from the USB device and doesn't like it.

The first of these seems unlikely to me. It's possible to transcode audio into MP2 format within Avid in the Consolidate/Transcode dialogue, but I don't think MP2 can be selected as an input format.

Regarding the second: The fact that you're not seeing audio levels in the Audio Tool ( I presume you put it into Input mode by clicking the 'O' at the top of the meter....) suggests to me that Avid doesn't 'like' the audio it's getting from the USB device. Could it be compressing the audio it's creating into MP2? You don't say what device it is.

Re: Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

This USB Condenser microphone was working on June 28, at least as far as creating files in the MXF/1 path but not creating clips in the bin.  If I selected the internal microphone of the Thunderbolt Display -- that creates files in the MXF/1 path and shows levels.  But not when I switch the Punch-in Tool to USB Condenser Microphone.  This is the device:

Hmm, I see your mic works at 192kHz  sample rate. I honestly don't know if Media Composer supports this for input - it may be the problem. Do let us all know what Support say.

I did go into MacOS's Audio MIDI Setup and tried all the kHz's.   No fix there.

Re: Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

Any updates on this? I've had this exact issue off and on the past few years on mac and pc. Avid recognizes the mic, MXF media is created but clip doesn't appear in bin or timeline. Sometimes it sorts itself out, no idea how or why. I've been using the Rode NT-USB and half the time I need to jump into something like Adobe Audition to record scratch and V/O.

Re: Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

It seems to be due to the Film option being on for 23.98 projects.  When I create a 29.97 or 23.98 project with the Film option off, it works.   Also make sure the Audio project settings level is not at zero.

Under Audio Project settings do you have the built in Mic selected?

My IMac also has 2 other inputs I can select.

Is input monitoring selected as ON?

Same problem on 2021.6 Catalina. Sometimes I can see the file in the MXF folder, sometimes not. Have never got it to work, I'm stuck using Capture Tape Tool :(

Re: Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

Hey thanks for this. This seems to be the case for me, I tested with another microphone plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett Solo thinking the interface might help but ran up against the same issues. Won't be changing that setting as we tend to perf slip a lot but I'm am so happy to finally have an answer for this!! Thanks again!

Re: Punch-in Tool does not record audio from USB microphone

Thanks Pat, yea I had gone through all those settings. In my case it seems to be what @chuckkahn said. My project relys on the the film option for perf slipping. Which has the unfortunate side effect of messing with the punch in tool.
