Dear Forum Members
I am running Media Composer | First 2021.5.0 on an iMac 2015 under Mac OS X Catalina 10.15.7 and would like to trial the Avid Control app 2020.11.1.0 on an iPad 7th Generation in conjunction with the Media Composer software.
I’m wondering if this is a supported combination because I find that when I go to enable EUCON in the Controller Settings preferences, Media Composer immediately crashes.
My installation flow is as follows:
Download and install MC | F 2021.5.0 from my Avid account and run the installer. MC runs existing short projects fine at this stage.
Download EUCON Workstation Unified Install 2020.11.1 from my Avid account and run the installer for S1/S3/Dock/Control/Artist. EuController appears to be running normally, and its interface is accessible from the Mac menu bar.
Download Avid Control 2020.11.1.0 from the App Store. This appears to run perfectly well under iOS 14.6 and the device name “Avid Control-2311” is allocated to the iPad.
In EuControl settings, add the iPad device “Avid Control-2311” from All Surfaces to My Surfaces. With the Mac and iPad added to the same WiFi network, EuControl appears in green under Settings>General on the iPad app, and indeed basic Mac desktop functions can be controlled from the Avid Control Soft Keys, leading me to believe that all is well with the communication between Avid Control on the iPad and EuControl on the Mac.
However, when I boot Media Composer and click on Preferences>User>Controller Settings, I can select EUCON as an option, but as soon as I click on “OK” the Media Composer software crashes fatally. Media Composer can be restarted subsequently without any apparent issues, but again crashes immediately if I try to enable EUCON.
Would appreciate any advice or guidance on whether this is indeed a supported application on the latest version of Media Composer | First; and if it is, what I might be doing wrong during the installation.
Thank you very much,
Jon
Updated information...
During fault finding, I thought I would try the same setup with Avid Control connected to Pro Tools instead of Media Composer.
To my surprise, the same iPad and same Mac, running the same Avid Control and Eucontrol programs respectively, and using the same Wi Fi network, work absolutely fine with Pro Tools | First 2021.3.0! I can control the Pro Tools faders, pan pots, inserts, sends, etc from the iPad with no problem.
Looking through the documentation, I see that Avid Control seems to be very much angled towards Pro Tools users. Is it a valid application to use with Media Composer | First 2021.5.0?
I'd really appreciate a view on this from the Avid mods.
Thanks so much.
Hi Jon,
Jon Hallett:I'd really appreciate a view on this from the Avid mods.
The forum mods are all editors who volunteer to help out here. We don't work for Avid, and while I can't speak for the others, I don't know of any official stance on whether the control apps are supposed to work with MC First or not.
I'd suggest you send an email to Raff Condalor (raff.condalor@avid.com). He is Avid's customer advocate, and can help you.

Thanks a million, Carl
Appreciate your time and the information, and thanks for setting me on the right track.
I see that the Control App seems to be supported on MC | F on this web page:
https://www.avid.com/media-composer/comparison
But I'll do just as you suggest and send that email.
I'll report back if I find out anything that may help other MC | F users.
BR, J
I sent email to our hardware team to confirm this. I will update this thread.
