Anyone using nvidia RTX 3070 with a 2021 MC?

I'm still having crashes when changing Workspaces and I'm wondering if MC doesn't like my video card.

Re: Anyone using nvidia RTX 3070 with a 2021 MC?

One thing I wonder right away is whether even the 32GB of RAM shown in your system specs is enough for MC 2021.  Since V8, MC has been using more and more memory.  Programs that request more memory but don't have it available often crash.  A suggestion is to open Task Manager before you open MC and watch the memory usage.  Then, switch workspaces while watching the memory usage and other stats in the task manager.  That might provide some valuable clues.

Are any other programs open when this happens?  If so, see what shows for their memory usage and try the same tests with only MC running.

If you create a new user setting does the system still crash when you switch workspaces?

    Wow, I didn't realise that.

I don't know how to keep the Task Manager window open while I switch Workspaces.  I copied some Memory information while I switched Workspaces, is that any help?

I don't usually run any other applications while MC is open.

    Thank you.

Re: Anyone using nvidia RTX 3070 with a 2021 MC?

When I create a new User Setting I don't have any crashes until I begin linking to Bin Layouts, and that's when the trouble begins.  The crashes start even before I import my custom keyboards and Link to Named Settings. I've set up six new User Settings and built up my Custom elements, but none of them work without crashes.

In MC Version 6 on my Windows 7 computer I made extensive use of custom Keyboards, Timelines and Bin Layouts and it was absolutely rock solid for close to a decade, a pleasure to use.  MC 2021.2 on a high spec W10 computer has been a frustrating mess from the start.

BTW, I use dual monitors, if that's any help.  At first it seemed that MC was quite happy to switch Workspaces without crashing when I used only a single monitor, but that has proved to not be the case.

Stay on the Processes tab and sort on the Memory column (high to low) like in my screenshot.

You can simply switch to the Task Manager tab to see what's happening for a while after changing workspaces.  MC doesn't have to be the foreground app and you may be able to have MC visible but not maximized so you can see the task manager at the same time you operate MC.  See which processes are using the most memory and see what the percent total usage shows.

OK. Usage changed very little when switching Workspaces.  Screenshot is directly ater a switch.  I switched 3 or 4 times until I encountered a crash and even then the usage didn't change much.  However Power Usage went to Very High, as it does when MC is starting up.

    Amazing.

Then why is my usage so low?

Actually I'd be happy if that was my problem because I'd know how to fix it, whereas at the moment I have no clue how to rectify it.

Re: Anyone using nvidia RTX 3070 with a 2021 MC?

    Alan,

If your memory usage stayed around 50% through that, it doesn't seem to me there's a problem there.  I thought we might see 80-90% usage.

Some other thoughts have come to mind related to things that have happened on one of my MC systems with certain MC versions over the past few months.  I'll be a little vague for a moment but I'll explain why I'm asking this after I have your feedback.  If you use the source browser, have you seen anything unusual with it?  If you haven't used it, open it and browse your computer's hard drives for a little while.  You don't need to look for any specific media or link or import anything.  Just browse through drives and folders a bit and let me know if anything unusual happens.

I'm not at that computer at the moment, but yes, though I'm new to the Source Browser, I have used it a bit and it works fine.  Used it last night, (I can get a bit done if I discipline myself to limit Workspace changes) and I had to dig quite deep into folder heirachy for the media and it was all smooth, no problems there.

    Thank you.

Good to hear, Alan.  I've had some really weird problems only in the source browser and only with a couple of versions of MC.  So, I thought if you did, too, that might be a clue.  What was the last most recent MC version where workspaces worked correctly for you?  Have you tried other versions, both major versions as well as point versions within the same major version?

    Version 6.         No kidding!Smile

I didn't have problems when I first installed 2021.2 and did a bit of paddling around to become accustomed to the changes, but once I started trying to use a similar workflow setup to what I had developed in V6 it began to object.  Along the way I've had help from Avid support and there have been theories we've followed up.  I used to use Project Templates that had all my custom Folders and Bins etc. and I would copy those into my new Projects and it was thought that this was a problem, but all the theories have proved to be blind alleys so far.

Personally, I think it's something to do with the new Bin setup.  It's not that I haven't adapted to it, I've applied myself to it and I'm quite used to it.  I think it's a case of I like it, but it doesn't like me Smile.

Alan you mentioned that creating a new user made the system stable but importing you customised layouts caused switching workspaces to cause the crash.

How exactly did you import those customisations?

I'd go back to a fresh user setting and confirm stability and the recreate any user setting customisations (don't import them)

Do one, at a time and then re test for crashes.
