2019.12 audio scrubbing crash with Blackmagic Decklink

    Hi all,

I am having constant crashes during audio scrubbing in 2019.12 with a Blackmagic Decklink Studio 2. The system is an HP Z840 running Windows 10.

It's happening with Desktop Video 11.7 and the latest Desktop Video 12.0. If I disable the hardware, the problem goes away.

All I need to do is move up and down an audio clip in the source window a few times, with digital scrub enabled, and the system will hang and need to be crashed via task manager.

I've just worked out that if I turn off Fast Scrub the system will recover after ten seconds or so, but then I seem to lose scrubbing the timeline! As you can imagine, this is beyond frustrating.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great. There is an error message when fast scrub is off, as below.

    Cheers,

    Ollie

This sounds like a problem I was having. After sharing some info with support they suggested the following:

"I noticed that your desired video memory is set to 4GB. Can you lower it down to 2GB?"

I have not been able to confirm that this has helped, but you could experiment if you wished.

Thanks Jef, my Media Cache Desired Video Memory was already on 2GB, but gonna try it on 4GB.

Thought I had the problem sorted last night with new user settings but just had another crash.

A new kind of crash with those settings ! Just to keep it interesting. Instead of a Windows dialog with Avid not responding, different windows went white, as below.

    not responding crash

I now realise it's actually a hang, if it's left 5-10 minutes the system can recover. In the console I get...

    "PlayerHostThread::Stop PHT not alive anymore"

Re: 2019.12 audio scrubbing crash with Blackmagic Decklink

Ok well I've been back and forth with BMD and Avid support and not got anywhere with this. I've tried all available slot positions and umpteen versions of Desktop Video I've still not got any closer to a fix. Avid think it's BMD's problem meanwhile BMD think there's not anything they can do as it works in Resolve / is too old, even though it's still supported.

Having searched through old forum posts I realise there's been historic problems with Blackmagic and scrubbing going back to 2014 and earlier, and obviously I've found countless posts suggesting that it's par for the course with BMD cards to require a lot of troubleshooting.

What I'm wondering now is if anyone actually has Media Composer 2019 or later working with a Decklink Studio 2 properly? And If so what versions of MC and Desktop Video are you on?

Re: 2019.12 audio scrubbing crash with Blackmagic Decklink

Well in the end I upgraded to 2020.10 and the problem is gone ! No more crashes, just the odd short freeze.

So at least I know now Blackmagic Desktop Video 12 works with 2020.10, with this card anyway.
