Import Problem with a *.MTS file

    I have 3 MTS files: 00008, 00009, 00010.

The first two I can import with the Source Browser, but 00010.MTS is not imported with the error message "unknown file".

With the VLC player I can play this file without problems.

Renaming 00010.MTS to another name xxx.MTS does not help.

Does 00010 link? If it does, you could link it and transcode.

No, it doesn,t link. And Import (instead of Link) also doesn't work.

If all three files came from the same source, and two of them work and one doesn't, I'd suspect something about the third file is causing the problem. Does VLC play it all the way through?

No, VLC cannot play the file.

What I cannot understand: MediaInfo shows no difference to the other 2 files.

I transcoded the MTS file into a M2T file (lossy, of couse). This also cannot be importet into MC.

    I give up further experiments...

Was that file a continuation of the previous file(s)? If so, perhaps that explains it - did you attempt a Link using a Folder containing all three?

Yes it was a continuation of the two prevous files, and I linked the folder containig all three files.

I was confused because in your initial post you wrote:

Anyway, if Avid won't link it or import it and VLC won't play it, it seems as though there's something wrong with it. Did any software come with the camera that shot it that might help?

If not, is it crucial? Can you reshoot it?

Sorry about the confusion. Fact is: I can play the file with VLC in another computer, but not in the one on which MC is installed.

The file was shot by my son with a simpler camera (I myself do not shoot MTS files), it cannot be repeated. It remains a mystery...

I'd try to figure out what is different about the two computers. Did the camera your son used come with software?

Cool [H] Re: Import Problem with a *.MTS file

Re-wrap the problem file using Shutter Encoder.  It's free, simple, nearly instantaneous, and re-wrapping will not cause a degradation in quality; it simple wraps the streams in a new container.

Thank you Larry. I donated 2x 5 USD by PayPal, then tried to download the shutter encoder exe file. However download failed with a message "unsafe site".

I have seen other people say their firewall/antivirus flagged up Shutter Encoder. I don't have an explanation, but I can say I've been using it for over a year with no problems. It's light, fast, and flexible.
