    Hi,

I usually use the link & transcode method to get files into Media Composer, as it's faster than importing and you get the same results.

    1. Right-click in bin

    2. Select Input > Source Browser

    3. Navigate to the file(s) you want to link to

    4. Click 'Link'

The files should now appear in the bin you clicked in step 1

    5. Select the file(s) you linked in step 4

    6. Go to the Clip menu and select Consolidate/Transcode

    7. In the Consolidate/Transcode window select 'Transcode' at the top left, the drive you want the media to go to, and the resolution you want the media to be, and then click 'Transcode'

    8. After the transcode finishes, you'll have master clips of your files and you're finished

If the clip is very long and you know you only want a smaller part.

After linking the clip. Load it in the source monitor. Mark and In and Out as required and drage the upper left clip icon to a bin to make a subclip (this subclip may not play well if the codec is demanding)

Transcode that clip to a DNx or Prores codec for nicer playback.

Also I'd uodate from 2020.4 that was the first 2020 version and a lots improved since then. 2020.9 has just been released.
