    HP Z400 vs HP Z420

CURRENTLY: SYMPHONY 6.5 running on HP Z400 W3550. WIN7 64 BIT Quad Core 3.06GHz; 6GB MEM; 320GB 7200rpm internal nVidia FX4800; Integrated SATA RAID; MATROX MINI MAX 3-Port FireWire IEEE HBA Card.

I have been using SYMPHONY 6.5 for several years now on my HP Z400 system detailed above. It has been getting slow but I do not want to upgrade SYMPHONY as it has been very stable. So I am looking at a new computer. After browsing the specs pages on Avid, I see that the HP Z420 is compatible with SYMPHONY 6.5, along with several other brands. As I been with HP for so long, I would like to stick with it. My question is whether the advantgae of Z420 over the Z400 is worth the trouble. The Z420 is Six Core 3.5 Ghz. The Z400 is Quad Core 3.06 Ghz. Will the Z420 be significantly faster? If not, can anyone recommend a better and compatible alternative?

    Thanks and all the best...

Re: HP Z400 vs HP Z420

I just retired 2-Z400a and I fried my Z800. I would think you need to get to a Z840 (which is what I'm going now). I can't imagine the Z420 could do well with 4K. You should upgrade to W10 too since W7 is EOL, esp. for security updates. (But is 6.5 compatible?) I just came off 6.5 a year ago. It was great and stable but I needed to support XAVC by going to 2018.10 and started to get some 4K. My Z800/M4000/96GB RAM was struggling with XAVC and 4K as well. I'm on 2020.6 now and learning the new interface. I was dealing with Jose at this company who does refurb HPs. So far he's been great to deal with and the prices are good. You can configure an entire refurb system to your liking on their site. Comes with 3 yr warrantee. https://tekboost.com/ After ordering a Z840 I started looking at refurb Z4, Z6 prices and they aren't bad either.

I would swap the internal HDD for an SSD and up the RAM to 32 or 64GB. On 6.5, the extra cores won't matter much. CPu speed does. But I recall moving to SSD from HDD and the difference was stunning.

Re: HP Z400 vs HP Z420

On my Z800 I went from HDD to SDD and didn't notice much of an improvement. At only $120 it's not a bad way to go. I was surprised. And remember, SSDs dont die slowly, they just die. Make back-ups. ;0

Re: HP Z400 vs HP Z420

I also recommend the SSD and RAM upgrades.

I'm also quite certain that we could upgrade the CPU to 8 cores for about 2-300 bucks used.

After that you can use the machine for 5 years more if you want.

The extras core spped of the HPZ420 will help. The extra cores will help if you have other apps ruuning.

So I'd upgrade. Add the SSD boot drive. Add 2 oe 4 spinning media drives RAID 0 and max the RAM.

The good change that happened between the 400s and the 420s was that PCIe3.0 became supported on the motherboard I believe, so newer graphics cards will take better advantage of the increased graphics bandwidth., although you may begin to face limits to the hardware you can install because of the PSU.  Honestly after all this time, a Z820 or or Z840 would provide you with more life and they are hardly expensive nowadays. I mean the 820 is 8 years old now, you can pick them up for less than £500 on ebay.  Treat yoself!

Yes, but you won't see real world performance differences from the increased bandwidth.

What CPU model is currently in your machine? you can look that up in device manager.

Hello to all who have posted to my query. Thank you. After looking at everything that you guys have advised, I decided that I needed to get a new machine. I especially after I discovered that LARRY Ruben, a moderator, had posted elsewhere saying that the Z820 is now in fact compatible with my symphony 6.5. And that is what I ordered from new egg, and exactly to the specs that Larry posted. Delivery on Friday. Thanks again. 💪🏻

    Peter,

Not sure if you are aware but we lost Larry many years ago.  He passed... but he was the MOST helpful, professional, sweetest man out there. Always had advice issued in a kind and nice way.

Miss him terribly each and every day.

I still use WWLD at the end of my posts to always remind me of how kind and helpful he was and to make sure I am the same.

Re: HP Z400 vs HP Z420

Thanks for the update I was curious how you were making out. You should be fine on the 820 and 6.5, I was running 2018.10 on my Z800 just fine, but 4K had to be proxy'd to HD. It put a smile on my face seeing Larry's name, he was a real gem and a fabric of this community. He's missed by all I'm sure.

Unfortunately not, no. But his many contributions here are still helpful to many.
