Re: ARM vs Intel: Which Macintosh to Buy?

    n3bur:

I bet 16GB would suffice for your day to day editing.

I wouldn't know about that… with the con that you cannot upgrade it (or anthing else, for that matter).
We'll have to wait for Avid's own tests…

    n3bur:
So come on guys, who couldn't wait and has bought the new Mac Mini and is running MC on an unsupported OS and an unsupported cpu architecture? Big Smile

    Bold move!
I'll wait for the (supposedly) all new iMac 24".
I hope the arm binary of MC will be finished by then.

FYI - Resolve dongle is not supported on the new M1 (yet?). BM is looking for a resolution.

Not sure about Avid dongles either.

My only doubt about that is if you can run ProTools with a licence key, as you do with Media Composer... Surprise

    Again, promising...

I begin to be curious about Media Composer's development progress...
    Does anyone have any news?

Avid's core users tend to be a hardware -conservative lot, preferring to see some track record of new hardware value/ performance before investing. Avid itself, has a stability reputation to uphold. You could expect development to be deliberate as this is more that qualifying an OS dot revision.

Indeed! I have that tendency myself. I move, when Avid moves.
However, this transition is a bit different. Back in the days of the transition From PPC to Intel, I opted to stay in PPC, which revealed to be a poor decision. The workstation was prematurely rendered obsolete, by the lack of software support, so the ROI was unsatisfactory.
Presently I'm in need of investing in a new workstation. I was about to do it, when the chip switch announcement was made in June. Then, based on my previous experience, I decided to wait for this new architecture.
Therefore, I'm following Avid's further development more closely.

Re: ARM vs Intel: Which Macintosh to Buy?

I am always cautious as relates to.0 software or hardware. For what it is worth, I would resist the rush to immediately buy. There will certainly be a faster more capable model perhaps more suited to MC in due time.

With a recent phone OS release, I think there was 8 patches within a month. PowerPC was a different case. Intel processors or other x86 units will remain in widespread usage across the computer landscape for some time.
