    Windows 7 Question / MC 2020

    Hey all,

I am setting a another system, Z820 with windows 7. I do want to upgrade to MC 2020 on that system. Before I purchase Windows 10, has anyone been able to work with MC 2020 on a windows 7 system?

    Thanks

I didn't try 2020.x under Win7. I would recommend using this opportunity to upgrade to Win 10, though. Even for free if you want: https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

    Re: Windows 7 Question / MC 2020

A little late to this conversation, but I've been told a few interesting things about upgrading to Win 10.

    1) You don't have to buy an upgrade or a new licence.

    2) If you intend to do a clean install of Win10 (probably the best option), you'll find that you can download  the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. This will enable you to create a bootable flash drive installer.

    3) Once installed, the software will eventually begin to nag you that you're using an unlicenced copy. If you do nothing about this, the only thing you can't seem to do is personalise your desktop (eg. change your background image) but otherwise, it seems as if there is no other restrictions in the functionality of the install. I've tried this on an older HP workstation I had knocking around, and I've not found any problems installing and running MC etc.

    4) I've read that if you have an old Win7 licence stuck on the side of your machine, you can use that code to licence Win10. Once you've done this, Microsoft will take a 'digital signature' of your machine (based on the hardware) which is stored on their licence servers, so that you won't need the code again if you choose to re-install the OS. In fact, the same source seemed to be saying that any Win7 licence sticker from any machine will work. I'm guessing you'll need a Pro 7 licence to get a pro W10 licence. Not tried this yet myself, but I might try it out in the coming weeks!

    Thanks Bruno,

I was actually able to upgrade for Free with that link. It was pretty simple. I did have a license stuck on my workstation so it probably used that as reference. But so far all good.

Or run the windows 10 upgrade and have MS register your hardware as win10.

Then wipe the machine and do a fresh win 10 install. Say you have no activation code but once it connects to the internet it will activate.

The initial windows 10 upgrade is a good chance to check you have all the drivers and its happy. Don't bother to install anything or customise. Just make sure it shows it as activated.
