    DNxHD codecs are gone?

Hi, really good codecs like DNxHD 36, 80, 85, 120 etc, are they gone for good or is it my 2020.4 installation? Can someone recommend alternatives for DNxHD 80? Prores must be lots bigger in file size, no?

Not gone, just renamed. The chart beginning on page 8 shows the old and new names:

Thanks Carl, I still can´t seem to transcode to any other DNxHD than DNxHD LB, DNxHD SQ, DNxHD HQ, DNxHD HQX... Is there a setting I am missing?

What is your project format/frame rate?

    Re: DNxHD codecs are gone?

    What's New:

    1080p/24 - 1920 x1080 OLD Avid DNxHD 115  - NEW DNxHD SQ

    1080p/24 - 1440 x1080 OLD Avid DNxHD 80 - NEW DNxHD TR

    1080p/24 - 1920 x1080 OLD Avid DNxHD 36  - NEW DNxHD LB

If you were using DNxHD 80, I assume that means your frame size is 1440x1080, so you should use DNxHD TR now.

My frame size is 1920x1080, the available transcode options do not include any DNxHD except LB, SQ, HQ and HQX, so I can´t use TR?

Ok, well if your project is 1920x1080 and you've got tons of footage and need to save drive space, use LB. If drive space isn't a problem, use SQ or HQ, and if drive space isn't a problem and you've got 10-bit footage, use HQX.

It's weird though, DNxHD80 used to be available in this project type, even if it was a subsampled thin raster type.

    Re: DNxHD codecs are gone?

I'm out of my depth. As Thomas says, TR is not a choice when you try to transcode in a 1080p/24 project, but there's also not a choice for a thin raster in a 24p project. Does this screenshot help?

    Re: DNxHD codecs are gone?

    Hey everyone.......

This is a difference in behavior between old and new implementation of MC.

In a nutshell - the old implementation included thin raster DNxHD points in full raster projects. And they acted as a full raster compression. New implementation is locked in with the raster of the project.

That means, you won't get DNxHD TR that is 1440*1080 in a 1920*1080 project. You have to switch to 1440*1080.

    The long story.......

In MC 19.12, AND in MC 20.4, there is no option for a thin raster in 1080p29.97, as there is in say, 1080p23.976.  In the main project settings, in MC 19.12 and in MC 20.4, there is no selection for it.

However, in Media Composer 19.12, there IS a DNxHD 100 resolution in 1080p29.97, which in other project types, is considered a thin raster codec.  In 1080p29.97, it is technically a thin raster codec, but resides in a project that does not support thin raster for Raster Dimension project settings.

So....When the codec name translations were done, and the initial operating points data was provided, DNxHD TR appeared as a translation option for DNxHD 100 in 1080p29.97 projects.  Customer documentation was created based on these early documents.

So what you will see is a mix of incorrect documentation and an odd manifestation of what happens when there is an attempt to create media with this codec in 1080p29.97 with MC 20.4.

The documentation SHOULD read, “1080p 29.97 DNx100 has been removed”  and Nora was go to do that.

With the new naming conventions, there was only DNxHD HQX, HQ, SQ, LB and TR where appropriate.  1080p29.97 in MC 19.12 had 5 DNxHD bit rates to fit into 4 names for MC 20.4.  DNxHD 220x was to become DNxHD HQX.  DNxHD 220 would become DNxHD HQ.  DNxHD 145 would become DNxHD SQ and DNxHD 45 would take DNxLB.  DNxHD 100 was the odd man out.  It did not belong on the original translation documents, and thereby did not belong in customer facing docs.

Avid recognizes pre-existing DNx100p as 1080p TR’  the software reacts ‘properly’, or, as well as it can without giving it some weird or corrupt name in the bin.  Maybe it is drawing the ‘TR’ name from the codec toolkit because TR is associated with other DNxHD 100 project options where it IS valid?

So yes, this was long-winded and probably a bit confusing, but the bottom line is, the docs need to reflect what the customer already knows.  “1080p 29.97 DNx100 has been removed”.  If you are under the impression you were using an actual thin raster, you would be mistaken.  If you are particularly attached to that specific codec in your workflows, I’m sorry to say, you will have to backrev, or switch/re-encode to the next closest bit rate, which would be DNxHD SQ. (Formerly known as DNxHD 145)

Hope that helps and I will follow up and see if Nora updated the doc's.
