Hi
Am I missing something - I wanted to export my sequence to a MOV H264 2 MBit - so far so good.
But there is no way to change the Pixelsize of the exported clip (only native) and also ONLY PCM sound export.
Which results in a large clip - no AAC or MP3 Soundformat....
At least I finaly could edit on my MBP 16 Catalina .3 and no crashes ;-)
Any ideas ??? how to get small preview H264 MOVs for my client ?
No, you're not missing anything.
I'd recommend you install Shutter Encoder - then export your sequence same-as-source (fastest option available) and let it do the H264.
Hopefully the holes in drect export from Media Composer will be plugged soon!
thanx ;-)

The only way currently to export a smaller mov is to change the project's frame size to something smaller.

We'll possibly lose Same As source export at some point in the future. So its worth looking at the MOV UME export options at the bottom of the list.
That has some direct H264 export options as well as various DNxHD ProPres and DNxHR codec options and they are all pretty quick.

In fact, in my short test, with an unrendered sequence (with RT Color Corrections), Same As Source was slower than UME-MOV to the same codec.
Not sure why we'd lose Same As Source, as it is very simple non-QT functionality.
The current SAS export produces a .mov so like QT refs I presume it still uses some QT functionality/libraries?
But I was told it would be dropped when we lose QT.
But I guess it could be re-introduced in the UME if needed. Maybe thats the plan?

I didn't think so. It basically just tosses the existing codec into a new (mov) container.
The current SAS export produces a .mov
UME-MOV also creates a MOV. But that does a (re)transcode.
I don't think we'll need it back (if it does go away), since the new UME is as fast as or even faster than the old Same As Source.
I hoped, that H264 Export would be finally as fast as on Premiere PRO....
I have to send dailys of H264 2MBit 1024x576 with TC embedded of 45 Min shows....
In PremierePRO I got used to export it in under 10 Min.
Back on AVID it takes 20-30 Min. Lost Time...
We have 2020 and powerfull GPUs - so whats the problem avid ?
Im pretty sure Avid isn't using the GPU for exporting (but I've not tested that)
Historically Avid has kept CPUs as the main engines for processing. Graphic GPUs mainly used for realtime effects.
While this disadvantages desktop systems with very powerful grpahics cards it play to lesser laptops and in the past ensured the editing experience across a range of hardware platforms was similar for very different processing setup.
But there has been a push for some years to follow what others have done in leavering GPU performance. Its just not got to the top of the pile.
I am trying to follow along here but I have't seen this answered yet -
What exactly is the new Same As Source export in this new version? Meaning, how do I export same as source now?
Hey Mikey
Thanks very much for your hint - bought and downloaded Shutter Encoder and was ready to export Same as Source, but that option isn't available.
Under MOV I just get AVC Intra, AVC Long GOP, Apple ProRes, DNxHD, H.264, and MJPEG.
Am I being an idiot? (quite fully expecting to be so!)
Old editors never die, they merely fade to black.
Same As Source is under the Quicktime export tab. But using MOV (which is a new tab) and choosing a DNx or ProRes flavor can be a faster export, depending on how many RT effects your timeline has. As is Op1A MXF, which Shutter Encoder also reads.
Is this some kind of extended April Fools joke that Avid has fogotten to revert? Why on earth would they release a non-beta version of their flagship software without a resolution slider for viewing copies?

Maybe they wanted to get a stable build of MC out for Catalina users?
Can you be sure those users would feel waiting weeks longer would have been worth it?
The new UME iis a great step forward and as helped Catalina users. It's a work on progress and we expect to see more features going forward.
But every tiny feature addition takes time to code and test. So features take time.
