2020.4 When is a JPG not a JPG?

I posted this in another thread (my mistake): https://community.avid.com/forums/p/199288/893132.aspx#893132

Mac OS 10.15.3. Here's the thing. I have a load of timelapse JPG stills from a GoPro. They link OK in 2019 and all earlier releases but not in 2020.4. JPGs should link and most of my other test images are fine. I resaved a trial image from Apple Preview at a different compression and that didn't link either. But ... I uninstalled 2020.4 and went back to 2020.2 Beta. In that release, my original JPG didn't link but the copy from Preview did link OK. So - looks like all JPGs are not equal or MC doesn't like some of them but I don't know what the difference is. If anyone at Avid would like my test image, let me know.

    Hi Roger,

I've had a few jpegs that won't link as well.  There's nothing I can point to as the cause - one was a pic grabbed from a website, one was a pic from my photos library from ages back. Other jpegs work just fine. Very odd!

I've sent test files to Marianna. One odd file would be OK but a have a few hundred timelapse images!

Unliikely. This is a folder full of known files that worked fine in 2019 and earlier releases. And I did rename one to test. If you are right, I've wasted some bandwidth!

Did you ever find a jpg solution, Roger? I've been able to load GoPro timelapse, but having trouble with some older jpg stills. I did try altering names too, but no luck.

Also having issues loading Sony Venice 4k footage from an AXS-R7, using nablet 4.6.7. Sony Catalyst provided a workaround but hoped for a more direct workflow.

Re: 2020.4 When is a JPG not a JPG?

Oh, man! You have opened a can of worms! My original comments that MC 2020.4 on Catalina would not link to JPEGs from my old GoPro Hero 3 got Avid to investigate and start a case (I haven't heard anything recently and other things have distracted me). Until your post just now I hadn't checked with MC2020.6 on Catalina. So I just tried that with bizarre results. A folder of 109 JPEGS (a timelapse from my old GP3) did link, but ... not 109 individual files each with a nominal 30 second duration which is what I'd expect. What actually happened is that the Source Browser seemed to interpret the sequentially numbered files as a file sequence, rather like that option in the Import settings. Even more bizarre is that the lowest numbered file (G0050774) created a moving clip of duration 4:13 and all subsequent files created moving clips one frame shorter than the previous one (4:12, 4:11 ... etc). The last file (G0050882) linked as a still with a duration of 30 secs, which is what I'd expect. G0050774 when linked, played and reported a rate of 24fps even though I was in a 25fps project. Never seen anything like it! Avid? Avid? click the image to see the entire Source Browser.

Oh - guess what? They sneaked in a new Link setting - nice one. So presumably I just select the first file. I must think before I post.

So - a good feature ... but why is this option OFF in the Import settings and ON in the Link settings? It certainly caught me out Sad.

Re: 2020.4 When is a JPG not a JPG?

Glad you got that sorted out, Roger. Frustrating why some files load and others don't, with seemingly little/no differences between them.
