    Media Composer Compare Two Timelines?

Does anyone know an easy way to take an Avid Media Composer timeline and another timeline which has additional editing. Then compare the two together to show only changes made? I was thinking of using the List-tool, EDL Change list for the task?

Footage is Avid DNXHD from AMA folders of files. Along with some Avid fx, mattes and keys.

    Thanks,

No Clever way. Even an EDL output will be complex but I guess you could input into a spreadsheet.

Simply I'd load one sequence in the source monitor the other in the record and gang them and then skim donw the timeline or jump edit point to edit point.

For simple timelines you can cut sequence 2 video tracks above sequence 1 video tracks and do it visually.

Thank you Pat for the suggestions. The 2 video tracks above in also a good idea. I'll try this, as working out what someone has edited onto a timeline as they forgot to add markers.

    Thanks,

I hate doing this, but the best way is to preemptively have the editor make his cuts in to a mixdown so you can see just where they've made changes easier. Not much help now but maybe a suggestion for the future?

Thanks, for all the suggestions. The video mixdown is a very good idea. I am going to setup a test project and test that now.

    Quick optical approach:

Open one Sequence in Source Monitor (by Drag & Drop Sequence into Source Monitor). The other open normal in Record Monitor (Double Click). Jump to the beginning of the sequence in both monitors. Activate "Gang" mode (may be you have to add symbol via command palette) and then you can scroll simultaniously brouth the timeline and see both pictures in sync.

If you Toggle Source/Record in Timeline or Toggle Source/Record in Coomposer you may also see differences.

Re: Media Composer Compare Two Timelines?

Thanks, making me thin kof an easy way visually to see the changes.

If I load the List tool in Avid Media Composer, choose change list and bring in the sequence inside the bin for the old and new edit. I can see the chnage list, but how can I easily use this on the timeline to see any changes?

    Thanks,

Re: Media Composer Compare Two Timelines?

One option to see a visual display of sequence changes...

    - Export each sequence as a linked AAF

    - Import into Davinci Resolve (free version)

    - Use the Compare Timelines feature

Would love to see Avid do a huge amount more work in this area. Dreams of git level change tracking would be something to behold.

Re: Media Composer Compare Two Timelines?

    Hello Mark,

That's a great idea about the Resolve Compare Timelines, will test this out now as well. Yes the GIT Level of changes sounds great as well. I think if Media Composer had change levels visually, and ADR, and conform/comapre across Media Composer and Pro Tools with-out Third party apps could be really useful. Or even a way of having Pro Tools Timelines, being piped into Media Composer. So you could edit in Media Composer, and then link into Pro Tools, do any live editing and changes. Instantly being made avaialble into Media Composer timeline, like a live link from the timeline into Pro Tools, and back.

    Thanks,

    Leo
