    2020.4 start up error

I installed 2020.4 yesterday and gave it a run. At first glance everything was ok. I have been working for a couple of hours without a single glitch. Then, this morning on start up I get this error:

    "Assertion failed: index<menu->actions().size()

    File: e:

    \ws2\workspace\MC\Release_Installer_Git\Win_Build\ppg\MediaComposer\MediaComposerUI\src\NewProjectWidget.cpp,

    Line:2061"

I re-installed Media Composer, trashing user settings, etc. but nothing seems to help. Even after the re-install I keep getting this error.

Can anybody help me out or explain what is happening here?

    Kind regards

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

Is the installer on the root of a drive/disk/volume? If in a subolder, sometimes these filenames get too long.

i had a different issue on one of my Win 10 systems, but that issue went away after I uninstalled MC, updated Win, then installed MC.

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

I'm aware of that problem, but I got no error whatsoever while installing 2020.4. Media Composer ran without problems after the install. And I didn't change a thing system-wise.

So the question is: what exactly is that error referring to?

Did clean install again and still the same error message during the start up of Media Composer.

What the heck triggers this error?

    Appreciate your help.

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

I have been on Windows version 1904 for quite a while now. Media Composer never had a problem with that. The weird thing is that MC 2020.4 worked fine yesterday. I opened several projects and checked the items of the 'What's new' document.

Correct me if I'm wrong but obviously the error line refers to a UI problem, doesn't it? The NewProjectWidget.cpp???

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

I do not know how to extract some sense out of error messages, and they may be misleading at times. Don't know it it's the UI, it could also be the installer, an engineer would ask for a crash log (if any). How did You upgrade? Did You install over the old version? I uninstalled MC 2019.6 and manually cleaned whatever it left over the system.

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

Initially I installed it over the existing version. But as I mentioned I did a clean install as Job ter Burg suggested and did that install after unzipping everything to the root of my C-drive.

And by the way, the Windows 1904 won't be the problem. See: readme file:

"The following lists the qualified Operating Systems. Depending upon your hardware the qualified Operating Systems are:

    • Windows v10 64-bit v1809 or later (Professional and Enterprise)"

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

Hi there...........    just got a great suggeston from Tina, one of our engineers.

Type in regedit in the lower left of your taskbar to bring up the registry editor. In the registry editor, navigate to  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\avid\MediaComposer it will have two keys under it - New_Project_Tab and Select_Project_Window
Rename the MediaComposer key under the avid directory to something else.  This will cause MC to forget everything that the Select Project window is remembering from the last time you used it. report back marianna

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

Hi Marianna. Tanx for looking into the matter. And... that reg modification did the trick.

MC's project window opens again and so far everything seems ok.

I would however like to know what really caused the problem. Does your engineer have an explanation for this bizar error?

Anyway, thank you for helping me out.

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

    Limeli1....

Engineering would like to have your Regedit key information that was causing the problem. Please go back into the regedit app.  Then select the folder you renamed that had been giving you problems yesterday. Then right click and pick export.  Then send us the resulting file to me directly. Thanks. marianna

Holy smokes, Marianna, I deleted that entry since it was causing the problem anyway.

No worries....  Tina just wanted to get to the bottom of it and get you an answer as to why.  But if it is gone - it is gone.

    Happy editing....

    Re: 2020.4 start up error

Marianna, I did send the crash report when the window popped up after the crash.

So, I suppose you can get a trace of what exactly happened.
