    Media Composer 2020.4

It is good to see a Catalina supported version of Avid Media Composer, but I see that it cannot open my old projects that have some h264 files linked. Will this be updated? It looks like neither linking nor import of these files is supported.

Not a reply but an observation. Installed 2020.4 on a Mac (10.15.3). I don't like the new 'Select Project' window - it is illogical. With previous releases, you could navigate to an Avid Project (which, of course appears as a folder in the Finder) and click 'Open'. Now, if you try this, it will ignore the fact that the folder you are looking at is an Avid Project and the folder is treated as ... a folder! You have to back up one level and select the folder containing your projects and only then will any projects within that folder will be displayed in the 'Select' window. This was so confusing that I committed the newbie sin of creating a project inside another project (that used to be quite hard to do)! And I am not a newbie. I think this new window is, to use a phrase, 'sticking lipstick on a pig'. Thing is, the old window was clear and accurate and usable. My 0.001 euros worth. Other aspects of this release look good.

Since Carl answered the OP I'll stay on Roger's OT.

After decades with the 'Select Project' window the same size of the VGA monitors age, we finally had a readable version just a few realeases back. Now the lipstick version, not a fan of the 'Frame' column, but I'm sure many will like it, I like the change font setting. Good to have the creation/modified date columns, while the 'Frame Rate' column is wasted space, overlapping with the 'Project Type' column. I also got rid of the 'Raster Dimensions' column. The old window used to list the project in alphabetical order regardless of capital or not, the new window lists projects beginning with a capital letter first, followed by project names beginning with a non capital letter, rather confusing IMHO.

Does that mean that Avid UME will allow linking but it hasn't been released yet?

Another comment (and yes, I have carefully read the ReadMe and What's New, regarding files and formats). I was pleased to see that we could create video from a file sequence by linking (see Link Settings) but the first one I tried didn't work. It was a series of JPGs shot on a GoPro Hero 3. Nothing would link so there must be a flavour of JPG, jpg, JPEG or jpeg that MC does not like. The next thing was that even though TIFFs are listed as being supported for linking, when I tried, MC crashed, twice. It's early days but worth flagging up, I think.

Just gone back to 2019.11 on another machine and the JPG that would not link in 2020.4 links fine in 2019.11. I'll check out the TIFFs as there are a number of ways of saving these files (different flavours of compression). Anyway it's raining outside and we are in semi-lockdown so this is time well spent.

If it is built in, I wonder why no old projects with h264 footage can be changed from offline or reimported or relinked.

Might be worth tracking down a recent webinar where I think this was covered but my link is broken. You may need to manually relink.

OK - I created a series of TIFFS. The two that work in both 2020 and 2019 are 'No compression' or LZW. the files with ZIP compression will not link. No idea about the JPG thing.

Start on the bottom of page 5 of the What's New guide where it says Important Notes. Here is where all the information about how linking behaves in 2020.x, and what happens if you have an older sequence with files that were linked using Quicktime.

    Philo Calhoun:

If it is built in, I wonder why no old projects with h264 footage can be changed from offline or reimported or relinked.

You should still be able to open projects in 2020.x with h264 footage linked in an older version of Media Composer using Quicktime, as long as Quicktime is installed on your current system.

    What's New:
For systems with QuickTime installed, you may still use AMA QuickTime for linking media. • If you’ve already linked via QuickTime in a previous version, the media will continue to be linked via QuickTime. You will not need to relink your media.

No. I have quick time installed now and in past and link or import does not work. You can't manually reimport or link either.

    Re: Media Composer 2020.4

In 2020.4 (Catalina), if I point the Source Browser at a folder containing file types MC doesn't like (probably TIFFs with Zip encoding) and I'm in thumbnail mode, MC crashes. List mode is OK. In 2019.11 doing the same thing is OK (but that's on Mojave, not Catalina). I don't mind the files being ignored but crashing is dispiriting!

    Re: Media Composer 2020.4

I always liked Avid Media Composer for its stability and ability to open older projects. I'm hoping Avid will release a fix allowing link or importing of H264 files in at least some wrapper. Meanwhile, it looks like the only option is to open older projects with offline footage and to use some other program to transcode the footage to some codec that Avid will import.

addenum: from tech support - h264 with fixed but not variable rate is supported.
