2020.4 on a test system, still 2019.6 on the main box, but it's very likely that I'll switch over that one too, and I'll update my profile! Embarrassed

Awesome that I can output ProRes from PC and not go back and forth to my laptop to do it. I also wish they can add support to link MPEG2 transport. That will save me a trip to Premiere Pro.

Re: MEDIA COMPOSER 2020.4 NOW AVAILABLE 27 APR 2020

Great new features. But... how do you expect me to actually use this version if right after installation all kinds of things don't work properly?

    - Composer monitors don't display video. Only if I move them to the other display. OR if I 'undock' them from the clumsy way windows are connected to eachother.

    - Selecting clips a bin is difficult, because the screen doesn't seem to be redrawn properly.

    - Timelines from existing projects open with exotic font, and no way to change them. Changing fonts in the Window menu doesn't change it.

All these things are very annoying and forced me to spend time on trying fixing them instead of enjoying a smooth upgrade experience. The same happened with the 2019 version when I tried that. I'm glad that Avid keeps polishing the 2018 version, because that is the reliable one.

Just to check, if you create a new user setting in 2020.4, do you see the same problems?

Re: MEDIA COMPOSER 2020.4 NOW AVAILABLE 27 APR 2020

Yes… Because you asked I reinstalled 2020.4 just to check. But it’s the same mess. Well, to be honest: the timelines open with proper fonts now. So that’s really great.

But screen redraw problems are still existing. Composer players are black. Clips cannot be selected.

My PC has an Nvidia RTX2080ti card which performs just great with MC 2018.10, and Davinci Resolve too by the way.

Re: MEDIA COMPOSER 2020.4 NOW AVAILABLE 27 APR 2020

    Jared Scheffler:

Would like to see a version that saves the UI layout across multiple screens (all set to same resolution). Tested on multiple systems with multi screens, upon each launch media composer will only load to one screen. Tried many times to save workspaces and check/de-check the host panels. The only way media composer remembers the UI layout is if every panel is undocked like the old media composer. This issue is currently happening on all 2019 versions and the new 2020 version. Very annoying. Please fix. It would be really nice if everytime we opened media composer the user doesn't have to reconfigure the UI because media composer doesn't remember "oh yeah there's 3 or 4 monitors". It's a pain in the ass actually, like everytime we launch media composer we have to reconfigure the UI!? I love media composer and do like the new UI but good grief, please fix the silly nonsense with the UI on launch. Other than that, liking all the updates on this version so far.

I have not installed and tested this on version 2020.4 yet, but on 2019.12 I also have this issue. Extremely anoying!

Please fix this soon Avid. Otherwise I must buy a single ultrawide monitor (DELL U4919DW) to replace my two EIZO screens. Stick out tongue

I'm afraid that You'll have to spot a driver that works well with 2020.4. I'm not a fan of the new GUI, but I do not see as many faults.

Re: MEDIA COMPOSER 2020.4 NOW AVAILABLE 27 APR 2020

    Hi Luca,

    Thanks for chiming in.

No, it's even more trivial than that. I just found that 2020.4 gets wonky if monitor #2 is the primary display, even though they have the same resolution, and come from the same powerful displaycard. I'll give 2020.4 a try now, although I truly resent having to recreate my usersettings for the umptieth time. Media Composer is the only software that seems to need that, as far as I know.

    Cheers!

Re: MEDIA COMPOSER 2020.4 NOW AVAILABLE 27 APR 2020

Yes Indeed, MC is finicky as for monitors configuration at OS level, You'll have to be neat and tidy. As for rebuilding user settings, it's an annoyance, but there's no other NLE as compatible across versions as MC is. I happen to move projects between systems running different MC versions, and/or to reopen (very) old projects, I couldn't do that so easily with other editors.

I didn't say to reinstall the whole thing. I said:

    camoscato:
Just to check, if you create a new user setting in 2020.4, do you see the same problems?

You can create a new user without reinstalling the whole program. You do it from the 'Select Project' window by clicking on your current user name and selecting 'Create User Profile' from the drop-down menu.

    Arnoud:

I'm glad. In my view, there's nothing of greater importance than the readability of timeline fonts, and they're what I concentrate all my abilities on when I'm working. You see, I alone program Media Composer. I wrote the original software back in the 1990s, and have been the sole programmer for every version and update from then until 2020.4, and thus your sarcasm and scorn are wholly appropriate.

I agree, that a huge advantage over other NLE's. I can't think of other software that manages to pull that off.

Ha! I didn't think you said that. However I already reinstalled 2018.11 so I could continue to work.

I don't get the joke of you being the sole programmer for all versions, I am sorry. If you were, I would have a list for you with wishes and suggestions for Media Composer. Some really basic that should have been there since the nineties, like a shortcut for opening sequences in the player. Just to name one...
