Confused about MC 2019 and Windows 7

Apparently there is a new version of MC, namely 2019 (I still have 8.9), but I'm not seeing it. I saw on a web page that MC 2019 is supported on Windows 7 Professional SP1, which I  have, but the Application Manager shows no upgrade for MC. I installed Avid Link to replace Application Manager, and it still says no upgrade. So my questions are as dollows:m

    1. Will MC 2019 run on Windows 7 Professional SP1?
    2. Is MC 2019 supported on Windows 7 Professional SP1?
    3. How do I install MC 2019 if it doesn't show in Avid Link?
    4. Should I move from MC 8.9 to 2019?
    5. Must I move to MC 2019? (MC 8.9 works fine, but I saw somethinhg indicating that 8.9 was going tostop working for people with subscriptions.)

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

    HI Aganthony,

Will MC 2019 run on Windows 7 Professional SP1? Yes.

Is MC 2019 supported on Windows 7 Professional SP1? MC2019.12 is the last release that support W7.  The next release 2020.x will not support Win 7.

How do I install MC 2019 if it doesn't show in Avid Link? You can download in your My Avid  or DLC.

Should I move from MC 8.9 to 2019? see this FAQ

Must I move to MC 2019? (MC 8.9 works fine, but I saw somethinhg indicating that 8.9 was going tostop working for people with subscriptions.) Subscription licesen can only activate MC2018.9 or later

That's the joy of the windows platform. Its always been easier to support legacy versions. I just don't get the Mac obsession with OS updates and breaking support. I guess if you want to force people to buy new hardware it makes sense.

Wow 4.05!  Can I ask a favor? Can you check to see if it had what I remember:

A way to click or double-click a clip or clips - so that they toggled between Slip and Slide trim mode?

And why did you go back to install v4, if I may ask?

Installed it on one of my student's machines.

Newer MC wouldn't work because of confused MS Visual C++.

I'll run your test next time i virtually see her.

Yeah, we installed avid on 100 random machines last week.

My hunch that Avid runs perfectly on AMD zen2 and intel i3 prooved true.

But hands off windows 10N, this wouldn't work anywhichway. not even MC 4.0.5.

    maybe i should have tried 2.6 ;)

Re: Confused about MC 2019 and Windows 7

I had quite a few really bizarre issues with newer versions of MC and trying to run it on Win7 on a powerful notebook.

All sorts of strange behavior and errors. After hours and hours with an Avid tech trying to fix things and even clean installs everything was pretty unpredictable.

I finally decided to stop trying to hold on to Win7 and upgraded to Win10 and things worked perfectly on the same system after that and has ever since. Part of that decision as well took into account that a lot of other software I use, such as Davinci Resolve, Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, and others just wouldn't support Win7 any more in their newer versions.

You will, no doubt, run into similar issues as more software developers just drop support for Win7 altogether.

My advice rather than trying to cling to Win7 and hope that things will be stable is to look into upgrading to Win10 or refreshing your system altogether with newer hardware that can take advantage of a lot of the performance improvements that newer applications are able use.

Re: Confused about MC 2019 and Windows 7

Thanks for all the replies. I did eventually fiund the download and installed 2019.12, which seems to worki just fine. It's odd that neither Application Manager nor Avid Link proposed the upgrade of MC, even though it is apparently supported. At the same time, they did propose an update of Pro Tools—even though the latest version of Pro Tools apparently does not run on Windows 7.

I tend to never upgrade anything if I can avoid it. Going from Windows 7 toWindows 10 would cost thousands of dollars and would provideno advcantage over Windows 7. Hopefully the bug count on 2019.12 is low and I'll be able to stick with it indefinitely.

    Not necessarily:

MediaCreationTool1909 still updates 7 to 10 for free.

Note however that this tool was programmed by microsoft and only works 50% of the time.

Re: Confused about MC 2019 and Windows 7

In my case, my last "upgrade" to Windows 7 did indeed cost a fortune, plus nearly a month of total or partial downtime. Upgrading often requires new hardare and software.

Last time I had a perfectly good Wacom tablet, but no drivers for Windows 7; replacing the tablet alone cost more than $300. I have nearly 100 applications installed, many of them paid for. Changing the OS often requires buying a new version of an application. Increasingly, vendors propose only subscription models, even though this violates antitrust laws (as AT&T and IBM discovered long ago—probabkly before current vendor CEOs were born). That means that I and my descendants must pay every month—forever—just to access my intellectual property (Avid still has perpetual licensing available, hoiwever, and thus remains legal). And sometimes software simply no longer exists.

Windows 10 also reports far too much personal information to Microsoft, and forces updtes that can break the sytem.

All in all, I prefer stable configurations that just run forever so that I do not lose time and money filling vendors' pockets. I don't fix something that isn't broken.  It's not good business sense.

Re: Confused about MC 2019 and Windows 7

    Wow.

You have more installed than most of us.

Drivers shouldn't be a problem this time, 95% should continue to work.

You can make a solid & veriefied image of your system and try upgrade anyway.

A vast majority of programs will just continue to work. Then you can figure out what pain waits with the rest of them.

But I'd hazard the guess the update tool will just fail and stay at win7.

If it works, you must make a new image asap and store it and the software that made the image super safe for years, because you can't install from scratch anymore.
