Avid Media Composer don´t work with Windows 10

Hello, it's time again to ask real professionals for help:
After 9 years of best work with AVID Media Composer 6.5.0.9 I had to switch from Win7 to Win10 just because of my tax accounting program! This was done wonderfully within 2 hours and even for free!

But then the big disappointment: My editing program AVID MC cannot be opened anymore! The main error is said to be the no longer compatible Windows Media Player. But under Win10 the newest Mediaplayer 12 is already installed. Therefore I cannot install MP 11 anymore and MP 10 is only common for XP.

What do I have to do to be happy again, who can help me?

    Dear greetings,
    Ron ron.bln@web.de

    Hi Ron,

Media Composer 6.5 is not qualified for Windows 10. You need to upgrade your 6.5 to the latest.

I suspected it, but then I need the dongle version. I hope that is still possible. Since I only edit videos privately I don't want monthly costs.

Where can I find upgrade options?

Thanks for the quick answer RalphC

    Same problem here (W7).

Ralph suggested try this; delete the following folders (although my PC lacked the last Pixie folder) and then re boot and try Activating you MC.  However, in my situation, Marianne had to first DEACTIVATE the state of Activation in order for me to Activate it again ! Strange as one day, out of the blue, my perpetual license MC7 that cost me over $1200 stopped loading ! Funny how that happens. After I ACTIVATED it again I was told, guess what ? In future since we know you using W10 (I told them) I have to buy the new version as W10 will not run MC7 ! If I knew MC7 wouldn't be allowed to run on W10 I never would have upgraded to W10. MSFT doesn't intend for W7 users to buy thousands of dollars of programs; if they did; no one would buy W10.

    C:\ProgramData\Avid\Licenses

    C:\ProgramData\Avid\SWL

    C:\ProgramData\Avid\Common

    C:\ProgramData\Pinnacle\Pixie

Also, uninstall Apple Update tool and don't upgrade your video card drivers. Apple no longer supports QT 7.

Another AVID poster suggested these to avoid W10 not opening W7 MC program in W10.

    Good luck,

    Patrick

PS: Searching for my W7 OP disk so I can build a second W7 PC for AVID MC7.

PS: My W7 DVD Arch program no longer loads\work under W10, but Dvd Arch W10 version can be bought for $100.

    Funny how that happens.

Unfortunately, W10 v2004 has been causing a lot of issues (including reports of SSDs being trashed by 2004 running a trim every hour).

You can rollback the 2004 update to 1909 from within Windows (and if you're not tech savvy, find someone who is to do it for you). Unless you installed 2004 instead of using Windows Update, in which case you're stuck with what you have.

I don't know if these instructions are still valid but you could try them.

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/how-to-download-the-windows-10-1909-iso-from-microsoft/

I suppose you mean you can't just uninstall the 2004 update which is the thing to do if possible.  That is, in Windows Update, click View Update History, then Recovery Options, then click the Get Started button under "Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows 10."  You may not have that option anymore but be sure of that first.

Thanks for the tip, it did not work there (i erased the recovery partition in BIOS) but here https://www.itechtics.com/ I found a direct link to MSFT for earlier version of (1909). I haven't installed 1909 yet, thinking of a dual boot with (2004) on one partition and (1909) on another c: partition. TechTips has interesting note regarding newer 1909 and 2004 being more compatible with newer Intel 10th gen cpus.

Just to be clear for anyone reading this, erasing the recovery partition on the hard drive would not have any effect on the two suggestions I listed.  They're not related to the recovery partition.

One suggestion was reverting back to the previous version using a feature within Windows Update which might have expired because of a time limit.  The other was downloading a copy of the 1909 update from Microsoft but I wasn't sure the instructions at the link would still work.

I'm glad you found a copy of the 1909 version. Hopefully, that will get you going again.

But there is a gotcha !

After 30days of using 2004 your stuck with it.

I managed to miss the grace period of 30days to revert back to earlier 1909 version.

You got more time than I did.

Everyone be aware that if you update, you may only have 10 days before you can no longer just revert to the previous W10 version from within Windows Update.  Check things out soon.

Re: Avid Media Composer don´t work with Windows 10

The default roll back period for Windows 10 is 10 days. While it's possible to set it as late as 60 days, a better option is to create a System Restore Point before doing the update. You can use that to restore the previous version of Windows if something goes wrong. Just remember that any changes made to your system (e.g. new application installs, etc.) will be lost when restoring a restore point.

For the instructions on how to roll back Windows, see the MS article HERE.

And in the usual twist of fate, MS has removed the option to change the roll back period. You're now stuck at 10 days.

Re: Avid Media Composer don´t work with Windows 10

    Update (1909) from (2004):

A comedy of errors; first I created another C: partition (hoping to install W10 1909 boot) and keep W10 (2004) boot partition alone.  So far no problem, then I copied W10 (1909) ISO found at https://www.itechtics.com/ and pasted to W10 (1909) partition. When I installed W10 (1909) I mistakenly wiped out W10 (2004) on C: I could have avoided these problems if I had copied downloaded W10 (1909) ISO to bootable USB, booted from said USB and then installed W10 (1909) on selected new partition drive letter; in my case I:

Wasted time, so had to delete the useless partion drive I: and it's empty companion recovery space using diskpart as admin. Then expanded deleted I: space back to C:

Bottom line, I now have W10 (1909) and MC7 will function again properly using W10; along with more storage space for C:

Plenty of technoids cursing at each other regarding the TRIM Windows 10 2004 reporting error.

    https://www.crucial.com/articles/about-ssd/what-is-trim

It appears that TRIM is not Defrag, TRIM, which is more a process in SSD internal controller firmware.

As the TRIM process wnen manually performed, concludes in 2 or 3 seconds, unlike the old defrag that could take hours with the drive sounding like it was getting a no parts automobile tune-up.

As a comfort, in drive optimization, I set the TRIM schedule to never, and perform every couple of days.
