    Background Transcode Problem

    This happens when transcoding in the background only. It's not dependent on media type either or any transcode settings. After a background transcode, I get a "media offline" message when trying to play the newly transcoded media. If I look in the '_bg.1' folder, the media is actually there. The MXF files play fine using an external media player.

    After some investigation, what I found was that the 'msmMMOB.mdb' and 'msmFMID.pmr' files are not getting updated. You can see that in the picture. The solution is to delete the 'msmMMOB.mdb' and 'msmFMID.pmr' files and restart MC. It then will rebuild the database. I tried re-installing MC but it didn't fix the problem.

    Re: Background Transcode Problem

    Could anyone possible do a quick test to see if you get the same issue? All you need to do is a transcode a file in the background. You''ll need to do it twice if you haven't already got a '_bg.1' folder to see if the 'msmMMOB.mdb' and 'msmFMID.pmr' files update the second time around.

    Thanks

    Re: Background Transcode Problem

    Thanks for those tests. I'm not sure what's happening with my setup. I'm going to run a few more tests.

    Re: Background Transcode Problem

    I think I've got to the bottom of the problem.

    I create a '\Avid MediaFiles\MXF' folder on my main media drive. For each project, which resides in its own folder, the '1' folder is soft linked to the media folder on the top level. It looks like this:

    \PROJECT-NAME\...\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 -> \Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1

    When MC reads the '1' folder at  '\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1', it's actually pointing here: '\PROJECT-NAME\...\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1'.

    The renders are on a completely separate drive and I don't separate them out. This allows all the files, including the relevant media, to stay within the project directory. With multiple projects, I end up with:

    \PROJECT-NAME1\...\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 -> \Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1
    \PROJECT-NAME2\...\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 -> \Avid MediaFiles\MXF\2
    .
    .
    .

    For some reason, the '_bg.1' folder does not like to be linked in this way - it needs to physically reside at the '\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\_bg.1' location, otherwise, the 'msmFMID.pmr' and 'msmMMOB.mdb' files don't update. No idea why it is working for one and not the other.

    Re: Background Transcode Problem

    Thanks Marianna.

    This is what I'm using to create the soft links.

    If you scroll down, you can see some pictures showing how it works.

    I tested it again and it's consistent: MC doesn't like a linked to '_bg.1' folder. If I quit MC and re-launch it, MC updates the 'msmFMID.pmr' and the 'msmMMOB.mdb' file picking up the newly transcoded media.
