    4.5 k question

    Hey all,

I have a question. I'm working with 4.5k footage, LF from the Alexa. How can I export my sequence 4448 x 3096? What's the best workflow.

I know in Premiere you can work with any aspect ratio and export it as is. But I can't seem to figure it out with Media Composer.

    Thanks

    Re: 4.5 k question

if your project is set to 4448x3096 for starter, you can output as mxfop1a and retain that format.

So that custom button in format settings, that's been there for years, can change project settings. Sleep

    Re: 4.5 k question

    Hi Touviere,

Got another question. I was able to create the aspect ratios in the settings. Very happy about that.

Now my question is, I have so many web deliverables, 1x1 & 1080x1920 are good examples.

When I set the setting preset to 1x1 and or 1080x1920, my sequence by default is squeezed. How do keep the aspect ratio of my sequence without it becoming squeezed?

    Re: 4.5 k question

    hi rob,

not sure what you try to achieve exactly, but a thing to understand is that when changing format, you will need to accommodate for the different aspect ratio, and to avoid distortion, you will need to either crop or letterbox your footage to your liking.

with clips in a bin, you can access frameflex and use the reformat option (right click/source setting/frameflex)

also, working with your timeline, you can change  the raster dimension in setting (control shift =   format/preset)

try playing with that as a starter...

Export an MXF master file. Start a new custom project that reflects your deliverable's aspect ratio. AMA link to the MXF master file and change your FrameFlex setting.

    Export out as usual.

    Hi,

Question: What if, for any reason, you wanted or needed to stay within the same MC Project, for two "Format-Tab-flippable" output versions because, for example, you needed to offline/work/online the full-size UHD (or largest, say 4.5k) timeline AND also a 1080x1920 "mobile-ready" version/ratio, simultaneously? Frameflexing can be tricky. Is it possible to set up a workflow using a single Project to be able to not only do the necessary cropping/re-positioning for clips on additional collapsed video tracks, for the mobile deliverable, but how would you Output that mobile-sized version?

I do agree that while it may be far easier to wait until editorial is locked to commence doing a FrameFlex as you suggested... I believe there *could* be a reasonable way, depending on the actual deliverable, (which *may* be a silent, mobile-sized version) to get it done inside MC using our existing Export tools.

This is the "Q"uestion many of us will be asking soon.

    Re: 4.5 k question

    Thanks all for writing back.

I do second Telegrams thought. My workflow right now is to export my final seq MXF then going into After Effects to make the 1x1 version. I tried various ways. Exporting 1080x1080 with Crop/pad was the closet to what I needed, but wasn't as effective as AE. In the end, the main goal is to stay within the program, and not bounce to another edit platform that can handle these mobile exports.

I think I am misunderstanding here. What do you mean by FF can be tricky? You are just using the other project's format option to resize the output of the main project. Once you have exported the UHD file, just AMA link back in a 1080x1920 project and export out.

Avid would need to rewrite the underlying code, AFAIK, to natively output files that does not match the sequence (thus, the project format). You can resize with some export options (Quicktime, Avid Process, etc.) but they are typically standard broadcast formats.

Hi Dom, Thanks for your reply. I'll have to answer later. Tricky for me, I guess, but I think two ratios at once is possible, maybe preferred for offline at least.
