Segment mode Glitch in 2019? Or is it a new behaviour?

I often lasso clips in the Timeline. It puts me in Segment mode and I can move those clips.

With 2018 and before, I could have the yellow and the red mode (pre)activated in the Segment Tool selector on the Timeline, and so after lassoing a bunch of clips, I could decide if I wanted the red arrow or the yellow arrow by aiming at the top of the bottom of a selected clip in the Timeline (hard to explain with text, I know!).

With 2019, when I lasso clips, it just defaults to Red arrow mode. I added the arrow selector above the Timeline, and if I put it in Yellow or Red/Yellow mode before lassoing the clips, I always end up with selected clips in Red arrow mode. It's slightly annoying.

I mapped the Arrow modes to the keyboard, so I can hit Yellow once the clips are lassoed, and this way I'm back to the "old" behaviour I'm used to: chose an arrow mode by clicking on the top or bottom of one of the selected clips as I drag them. I'd love not to have to add the extra key press though.

The other weird (new?) behavior is that if you select a section of clips, then switch from Red to Yellow (or vise versa) you lose everything you've selected and have to re-lasso everything.

ramz434 you are right... this is weird, unlogic, very time waste and consuming change in MC 2019 line... Avid please return in MC 2020 possibilty of change Red/Yellow segment mode WITHOUT loosing segments selection...

Hi, you can map the ST button in your keyboard and activate/deactivate the smart tools with a key. The selection will not be lose and you can see both arrows and choose one.

No, it isn't work that way... after mapping ST to keyboard- mouse- screen- button hitting it simply deselect marked segments...

I want to use default MC keyboard mapping: toggle Shift-A (red arrow) to Shift-S (yellow arrow) and viceversa WITHOUT loosing marked segments selection, as before MC2019...

On mine, when I lasso clips, it defaults to Red arrow mode. But if I hit Shift-S (which I remapped years back to S), it "adds" Yellow mode and keeps the clips highlighted. I can then decide which Arrow mode I want to use by grabbing one of the selected clips from its top or bottom part in the Timeline. Mouse pointer turns into a Red or Yellow arrow accordingly as I hover over the highlighted clips.

I would just love Lasso to do what it used to do: select clips and activate whatever Arrow mode was last selected. At the moment it looks like something didn't quite translate right when Avid changed the interface (and removed ST from the Timeline).

(I should add that in my Timeline Settings, I have ticked the box "Clicking the TC Track or Ruler Disables Smart Tools" (default is unticked) and I have left "Only One Segment Tool Can Be Enabled At A Time" unticked, which is the default setting.

Re: Segment mode Glitch in 2019? Or is it a new behaviour?

Ok, but I want to use only one mode - RED or YELLOW... and I want to decide and switch after segment selection..

This is example what I get in MC 2019.12 when I press shift-A (RED segment) mode then after selection press shift-S (to Yellow arrow MODE) and viceversa...

ST is irrelevant - always remove selection.

Prior MC versions (2018.x, v8, v7) keeps selection. MC 2019.x not.

Re: Segment mode Glitch in 2019? Or is it a new behaviour?

If you're in Red upon lassoing, then activate Yellow (at this point you should get both Segment modes and your clips should still be highlighted) then deactivate Red, does it work?

I know, it's cumbersome and not efficient. But as a workaround?

    Thanks Marianna!

Got a mail from support, let's see.

Was thinking: when Smart Tools was introduced (was it some kind of addition to attract Final Cut Pro users who loved tinkering directly in the Timeline or somehting?), one of the issues was that you could select a bunch of clips and then hit Delete and throw the timeline out of sync by accident if you were in Yellow mode. Especially dangerous if you have both segments mode activated as you hit Delete: there's no way of knowing which mode takes over if your mouse is not hovering above one of the selected clips. I sort of remember that the "Default Segment Tool" option in Timeline Settings was introduced just for that: make sure hitting Delete on a bunch of clips wouldn't do something weird/unexpected - hence why it's Segment Overwrite by default as this is a more predictable behaviour: hit Delete and the selected clips disappear, leaving a gap where they were, and the Timeline overall duration is not affected. It's safer. If you love living the risky life, feel free to change Default to Segment Insert...

It could be that during the interface redesign for 2019, engineering didn't quite remember what that option was for and applied it accross the board for Segment mode and Smart Tools (which sort of disappeared from 2019, let's be honest). Where really, that behaviour should be dictated by the "Only One Segment Tool Can Be Enabled At A Time" Timeline Settings.
