    How to Start 4K

    Hi,

This might seem an obvious question, but I wouldn't know as yet.  If I shoot 4K then how to start a new project in Avid?  At the moment my settings would be 1080/25p and to import/transcode at DNxHD 185.  I have never edited in 4K before.  What advice would you give?

    Thank you,

    DC

You can select standard 4K frame sizes when creating the project - DCI or UHD. You can also change the project frame size anytime. Nothing particularly unusual with 4K projects compared to SD or HD, except interlace is not possible.

Its important to be clear if you need/want 4K or UHD as they aren't the same.

TV stuff is mostly UHD (even Netflix now)

    4K is cinema

Whilst you can shoot 4K for TV you will end up scaling and letterboxing or cropping the edges off to deal with the aspect ratio mismatch.

Also unles syou have a really powerful computer and very fast storage 4k/UHD will be very demanding and the editing experience maybe unacceptable.

Its common to ingest as 4k/UHD transcode to HD for the creative edit (offline) then conform and finish at finishing quality.
