You could also use BMD Fusion Studio ($300) with its Fusion Connect plugin into Avid for some elaborate particle effects. Here's a link to a YouTube tutorial by VFXStudy: here. This shows the use of Fusion. It does not show the use of Fusion Connect into Avid although you could check out this one here to get a sense of the general workflow.

It's not quite the same as using BCC (which I highly recommend, although it's expensive) - but the things you can do in Fusion are quite impressive.

Add - I should mention that the Fusion Connect tutorial uses a very old version of both Fusion and Avid. If you are running Media Composer 2018.7 or later you will require the use of the paid version of Fusion Studio 16.1.1 and the latest Fusion Connect plugin (the plugin is available for download at the BMD support page, Fusion Studio 16.1.1 must be purchased through a 3rd party such as B&H Photo Video - online they are selling the Fusion 9 license (it's a dongle) - this will allow you to run Fusion Studio 16 and also Resolve Studio 16 - so it's a two for one if you buy the Fusion Studio dongle).

    Cheers
