Just my 0,02$.
The problem is not the ability to see that the new UI is a step in the right direction. Like said millions of times, the UI didn't evolve over the past 20 years like it should have.
The problem is also not that the new UI is so handicapped that it is unuseable for 90% of the user base. If the new UI makes MC more accessable to new editors and others coming from other NLE's is something I can't comment about.
The problem imho is that the current development cycle is too short and that every new version being released contributes to an exponentially increasing (at least in my case) feeling of being part of an involuntarily beta testing program that keeps breaking down the perception of quality and reliability of MC and all Avid products. Combine that with a licensing program that forces you to only be able to use 2018.9 and up on new licenses and a sense of entrapment becomes apparent.
That said, Avid going back to maintaining (patch development) for multiple versions of a product is a sign they understand the situation. The question is for how long and if that period will be long enough to iron out 98%-99% of all problems and adjustments.

The bin container window, with the bins enclosed can be resized so you can reposition it and see outside of it by clicking the standard maximize button. But I generally just minimize Avid completely if I want to get something off the desktop.
jameslondon74: 2. how do you feel about one bin opening up to fill the entire height of the bin container, despite how many clips are in it?

If it's bothering me I resize that particular window. (Hope that doesn't come across as too glib.)
jameslondon74: 3. Now that you’ve worked with it a while, what’s your preference for organising many open bins? Do you use tabs? Do you dock the on the left hand bar? Do you split the window into sections? I’m really interested to know how you’ve reacted to it.

It's situational for me based on which bins I need access to for this particular scene or section. I usually have a small "permanent" bin near the top with my project window and sequences, and then a larger window with tabbed bins below. But it is really a matter of personal preference.

Yeah, I haven't quite cracked the code on what gets saved and what disappears in saved workspaces. Nonetheless I find it generally preferable to the previous method of having to look under bins to find other bins.
Hope this helps.
...deleted, double post.
Amazingly helpful thank you so much. Some responses..
(point 2) "If it's bothering me I resize that particular window" - but you can't make it smaller than the window it's in? It either has to be full height or full width, correct?
(point 3) - Do you mean you have 2 bin containers, each split up accordingly? If so, workspaces won't save them will they?
I'm getting a good picture of what I need to 'drop' in terms of old Avid. Thank you.
jameslondon74: But the reason they pick Premier might be because it's CHEAP.

Is it cheap? FCP and resolve are much cheaper and MC subscription is the basically the same price as premiere.
Dont be a dinosaur. The UI needed a refresh.
yes I don't want to be a dinosaur. But throwing out useful and familiar tools without any reason is not helping anyone.
The value proposition for Premiere is that it comes bundled with a bunch of tools most of us are using anyway -- like Photoshop and After Effects.
Still prefer editing on Avid.
jameslondon74: hi all, Why would Avid re-design Media Composer to compete with Premier?? If they make it work the same as Premier, then people will just use Premier. Shouldn't Avid stand out from the crowd and do its own thing, and do it WELL? Interested to hear decent justifications for this re-design. (in my opinon, fixing solutions that never existed in the first place, but happy to be told otherwise) Thanks.

Hi james.... Aologies for not jumping in sooner... been crazy this past 2 weeks with a lot of launch plans internally and IBC.
This is a struggle, quite frankly. We know that the enterprise customers will just use it for logging clips. Maybe there is a better way. I can tell you this is not the reason people are using Adobe over Avid, the situation is much more complex. Multiyear agreements with CSuite with Adobe, talent is cheaper to run Adobe over Avid and much more. I’ll discuss with Product management and get back to you all.
BTW........We did not make Media Composer more like Adobe, btw. That’s a false comment IMO and way off base from our intentions. We made Avid better based on ALL the feedback we received over the last 6 years - and got the app up to the current decade. You can make it what you want or make it more like it use to be.... thats why we did it plus all the foundational work that you will see in features as they come to fruition.

Thanks Marianna, I'm trying to remain optimistic and positive about the changes, I just know I have a ton of colleagues yet to face this version and they won't be happy.
It seems like a few staple features were removed for seeminly no reason. For example, why get rid of the central mode buttons? (that contained overwrite / insert, trim mode etc). Ok - so we have to map those buttons now, but you've removed the number of customisable icon slots by getting rid of the burger menu that popped up a whole separate pallete of icons. And even then, you should expand the icon row above the timeline to fill the entire length of the timeline.
It's like you put some things in, but take others away. two steps forward, one step back. Maybe that's how it goes.
There are a few other things that are frustrating, found on my other posts.
