exporting QT Reference with AMA footage

    Hi there.

I'm working on an animated film for a client.  My animator gives me the video and I'm using Avid to do sound, sfx, and captions.

My goal is to avoid transcoding unnecessarily.  So I was trying to export a QT reference that I would then use with MPEG streamclip to export an MP4.

I realise that you can't do that. My normal workflow is to do a Video Mixdown of course. But transcoding the animated video seems to affect the colour.

    Advice?

    Thanks.

You can't export QT Reference with AMA linked or long-gop, it's a limitation of QuitkTime, not Media Composer.

Use the New Avid Media Engine or OP1a if you are on latest version to export high quality media. e.g.XAVC-L, or Panasonic Long-GOP

If you export Stereo, then make sure to also check the interleaved check box for more compatibility with 3rd party software.

MXF is a far better standard than the old MOV file format.

You can easily use the exported MXF fiels to upload to youtube, vimeo, encode with handbrake and more.

Colors will be more accurate, Exporting will be fast, and it's a better format for the future, and as archival.

Thanks so much, that's really helpful.  Generally my clients need an mp4.  In the past I've used mpeg streamclip ias it's pretty simple.  But that software doesn't work with MXF files.  Any recommendations for a compressor that works well for this workflow?

    Brad,

It might be helpful for people to know some details: Avid project Format settings, specs of the source file(s) and specs for the mp4 that you return.
