MC uses qualified cards for the 15-20% of some aspects as AMA exports.

Care to offer any evidence? Genuinely interested to see some data on this?

Sorry George, that's my fault, I wasn't being clear.  What I mean is, is there any evidence that a Quadro card will perform better than a Geforce card doing the same task?

I have never said that a slower card will perform better than a faster one.

What we are talking here is about stability and overall compatibility.

And to test this I would have to have a Geforce to exchange it with my P2000 which I don't.

If I did I would happily do it.

I thought we were talking about whether Geforce cards are supported within MC? I'll wait to hear definitively from Avid on that.

Re: Is this setup okay to run Media Composer ?

    Hey Rip and George......

Most of that scope came by way of our hardware testing team - Dave Pimm and company.  from my expereince, I would choose a higher core i9-79xx for better processing power. Myself I dont have much experience with GeForce cards in general (for MC - not gaming). I do know that the emory has 4 lanes, I would opt for 4 x 8GB DIMMs instead of 2 x 16GB DIMMs.

Let me ask Dave again what he thinks as he tests this stuff allllllll the time and allllll day long.

Thanks Marianna!  My main question is are Geforce cards supported as well as Quadro cards? They didn't used to be but I think things have changed and it'd be great to get confirmation.  The ability to spend hundreds less on a GPU that will not affect how Avid performs would be useful info to a lot of people.

    Cheers,

    Dave says.........

Regarding consumer vs enterprise graphics cards:  HP, Dell and Lenovo offer ONLY enterprise graphics (Nvidia Quadro)  with their workstations. You cannot buy the consumer GeForce cards on these systems.  Since Avid only qualifies workstations, we only test enterprise graphics – makes sense???

If the customer wants to save money, buy the lower cost Nvidia P600 or P1000. The difference to a GeForce card can’t be more than $50!

Re: Is this setup okay to run Media Composer ?

    Makes total sense.

The cost difference between a quadro and the equivalent geforce is pretty large.  Example - Quadro P2000 on amazon: £439, Geforce GTX 1060:£253. P6000: £859, GTX 1080 £550.  In other words for nearly the same price as a P2000, I could buy the consumer equivalent of a P6000.  I may not see much difference in MC, but i definitely would when I'm grading in Resolve.

So while I understand that Avid doesn't test them because they don't come as a default with your qualified systems, as long as that's the only reason, then you can see why I'd prefer to go with a geforce. I'd rather spend that money on a faster CPU or PCIe storage, something that will have a significant effect on performance rather than a component which isn't bringing much to the table.

Having said that, I stand corrected. This explaination makes sense and I doff my cap to you George!
