Hello groups,
A friend of mine suggested the following build to run Media Composer... Now the only thing I see up front is that of instead buying 2 x 8Gb of RAM, I would opt for 2 x 16 Gb instead (32 total seems better)...
i3-8100: http://bit.ly/2AfilUW
MSI Z370-A PRO: http://amzn.to/2kqLaGO
G.Skill Ripjaws V 8GB (3200Mhz): http://bit.ly/2k0Bb74
WD BLUE 1TB: http://bit.ly/2B6pO8J
Zotac GTX 1060 6GB: http://amzn.to/2ksP0iH
EVGA 500W: http://bit.ly/2jogHG6
Rosewill Nautilus: http://bit.ly/2ivSi09
What do you think ? Any changes you might suggest ?
I'm not sure that MC will run well, if at all, on the I3. There's no hyperthreading, so you've got 4 threads max. This will really hamper performance, especially for transcoding. It also looks like you're going to have a single drive. You need a separate drive for the system, and 1Tb of drive space for media gets consumed very quickly. The video card is OK, and 32Gb is definitly preferable over 16GB.

Something I was laughing at start but now I am positive about.
MC will run on a plain Geforce but I would buy again a P2000 over any Geforce.
And i3 it's a big NO for me.

i3 is not qualified I check it with hardware guys before, definitely stay away from i3. I have a set of G.Skill Ripjaws RAM before good product as far as I can tell.
Thanks,

Ok... Thanks
I will check to get the i3 replaced with something compatible... I do have the option to purchase the Intel Core i7-8700 Coffee Lake 6-Core 3.2 GHz (4.6 GHz Turbo) LGA 1151 (300 Series) 65W BX80684I78700 Desktop Processor Intel UHD Graphics 630. Would this processor be more acceptable ?
As for the drives, I will be adding more drives for the media to be on a seperate drive (not the same as from where Avid is installed).
I will also look into the P2000 that George suggested.
I would choose the 9700K but it's very new.
However the i7 would be at my list for a new PC.
I run an old 2600K at @4.4G for over 8 years and still rocks.
Make sure that every disk is an SSD.
I have as by my description 1 SSD for system.
2X500 SSD (RAID 0) for backups in PC (many others by e-SATA for backup)
and I am planing of 2X1TB 500MX (RAID 0) Crucial to replace my 2x2TB RAID 0.
ive used 2600k, 4790k, 7700k, 8700k, 7820x, 7940x for my avid builds.
I think a 8700k would be a good bang for buck cpu right now.
hyperthreading will help with transcoding, exporting, compressing, etc
i see one for $300 right now on slickdeals.
What is the benefit of spending an extra £400 on the P2000 over the geforce card? As far as I know MC uses barely any of the GPU to accelerate anything other than a few specific effects. CPU is far more important and a higher clock speed over more cores is also preferable I would have thought? The new 6 core i7s look pretty nice.
Genuinely interested, no one's ever been able to tell me why Quadros are any better than Geforce cards in anything other than software specifically designed to benefit from things like processing images in parallel. If no one's got a good answer to this, then I'd stick with the Geforce and save a bunch of cash and spend it on the CPU instead.
Andi
high end gfx cards are so avid can blame poor bastards for crappy performance.
but really, theres no reason why geforce cards shouldnt be able to play back 2d well. Geforce cards are built for way more sophisticated gpu processing than 2d video playback.
But geforce do work good enough in avid, so all good.
MC uses qualified cards for the 15-20% of some aspects as AMA exports.
Geforce works but trust Quadros till the day Avid will say we can use them as well.
Sorry to be a stickler George but Avid does support Geforce cards now, even if there's no specific guidance they do it tacitly through the GPU blacklist. This is a quote from Marianna:
"We changed from a GPU white list to a GPU black list.
When you launch media composer it looks for greater than 2GB GPU memory. If that is good it does a transfer to GPU test. If that passes it turns on the GPU acceleration.
If one of these tests doesn’t pass it doesn’t turn on GPU acceleration.
The black list ONLY contains cards where we know there is an issue".
That list is mostly populated with old Quadro cards and a couple of AMD Fire cards on my list. So i think Avid knows that there's no difference between these cards now, who knows why they won't come out and say it? Maybe some deal with HP or something.
In terms of bang for your buck, I'm pretty sure the Geforce cards are much better value. Sure, if I was using Mystika I'd want a Quadro, but if I was building a rig for editing and possibly a bit of grading in Resolve, then I'd spend my money on a Geforce. Since the RTX range has been released and crypto miners have decided it's not worth their time any more, there's a large amount of older stock sitting around which should mean very competitive pricing on some of the 1080 series cards which would destroy a P2000 for the same price or less.
Having said all this, I'd love to know Avid's official stand on all this so we can finally put these Quadro vs Geforce arguments to bed.
George Angeludis: MC uses qualified cards for the 15-20% of some aspects as AMA exports.
Care to offer any evidence? Genuinely interested to see some data on this?
I posted at my MC Diary thread for some time now.
Open your task manager when AMA exporting and see.

This is your intepretation. It's not what M says but if M would say it, it would be right.
Marianna, care to comment?
