Import P2 or Link via Source Browser results in partial file? MC8.6.3

    I started editing on MC7.  All P2 imported fine using file/import p2.

I upgraded mid-project to MC 8.6.3.  When I moved into online editing, I discovered I had to re-import the P2 from the original external drives where it was stored in order to upres it.

Linking, and then transcoding to DNX 175, I wound up with everything online OK.  Except for one pesky clip.  Halfway through the clip, it reads "media offline".

The clip had imported completely into MC7.

So I figured the drive had been damaged in some way, or that clip on that drive.  I used the backup.  (And religiously deleted the corrupt file, trashed databased in MXF folders, etc., installed the right P2 plugin, and started new sequence in new bin.)

The backup does the same thing, when linked and transcoded. And if I iimport P2 to the bin, same thing, but doesn't read Media Offline-- it just ends early.  A chunk of the original is missing from both backup drives.  Which is weird, because it was there when I was working in MC7.

Please help.  It's been two days of this.  Alarming to lose this footage right at the end, and it looks like an Avid problem.

Sounds like you have a spanned P2 clip.

    If memory serves, try this:

    1. Download and install P2CMS for Mac:

    https://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/content/download/EN/ep2main/p2cms_li_mace.htm

    2. There should be a "merge clip" function inside P2CMS. Locate your clips, join them, then copy them back out to a new P2 volume.

    3. In MC, link to the new P2 volume, then transcode.

Thank you Isaac!!!  Just in time-- I'd tried everything, including transcoding in an older import from a different drive-- it came in fine and then did the same thing while editing, that footage is just gone.  I was about to decide to leave it out of the film.

I'd been wondering about spanned clips and the P2CMS, but it was very hard to tell if this was that problem or not.

    I'll give it a try.

    Hi Isaac,

Just tried the link and it's 32 bit only.   Does not list El Capitan as an OS.

I don't get a spanned clip error message.  Just the last section of the clip goes blank every time, and seems to proceed to corrupt all else.   And I had no problem with that clip on 7.0.4 with an earlier Mac OS.

OK. Can you try their newer app - P2 Viewer Plus:

    https://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/content/download/EN/ep2main/p2view_plus_e.htm

I seem to remember it being more limited than P2CMS, and one of the limitations was no clip merging. But I could be wrong. It's been awhile.

You might have to download the P2 driver itself. Driver download link's at the bottom of that page.

If that doesn't work, let me know.

Re: Import P2 or Link via Source Browser results in partial file? MC8.6.3

Isaac,  Doesn't look good.  There's a red exclamation mark on that (original) P2 clip.  No mention of merging.  When I tried split spanned clips, there's now quite a few red exclamation marks...

File must just be corrupted?  But why would two separate backup copies of the P2 folder have the same file messed up now-- when it worked fine in MC7.0.4....

On the bright side, I suspect the software (and driver-- which is not the same as the P2 plugin) is probably a godsend for when I download P2 clips again.

For those of you facing corrupted clip issues, error reports, project crashes, locked bins, etc., there's an excellent blog piece :
