Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

Not to my knowledge, no. The post above is spam/false.

At least not for Media Composer.

As Mariana had mentioned, this improvement was pitched to Dev, but the actual effort required to get a change like this implemented is significant and will not be quick.

As far as Pro Tools is concerned, I do not follow what is released there.

Be interesting to see what the update to Vega 16 and 20 GPUs at the end of the month changes.  I'm looking in to getting a new MBP for work but the Radeon 560X is pretty old news.  Mac pricing in the UK is insane right now though so I'm guessing I'll get absolutely fleeced for any extra performance they bring. Apple really needs to up their "Pro" game.

Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

Curious as to what post is false? Currently I have a 2013 trashcan running HS and MC 2018.10 and I have a Sonnet breakaway box with a GeForce 1070ti 8 GB hooked up via thunderbolt. Both external monitors are being sourced from the egpu and Media Composer is using the 1070ti to do DVE effects. Unless I'm missing something, it would seem that it is using the egpu. It maybe not leveraging it to the fullest extent but it seems to be performing better than my trashcan with the 2 D300s....

Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

From your stand point, I think you’re right. But if I am remember correctly, the initial discussion was around an eGPU coupled with a MacBook Pro where the display (at least last time I checked) will always be driven by the internal GPU as opposed to external and therefore MC would ignore the eGPU.

Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

did that as well. Works like a champ. I did an earlier post on this. The trick was having a monitor hooked up to the egpu and then making that monitor the "primary" monitor. I added new life to my 2012 MBpro with a 4GB Geforce and a OWC box.

Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

@All: even if you're seeing video out of the eGPU, there's very little benefit for Media Composer use. More details here:

http://www.avidblogs.com/how-avid-media-composer-uses-a-computer/ (tl;dr - Do a Find in your browser for "GPU".)

Other apps – DaVinci Resolve, Apple's Pro Apps, Adobe CC – leverage GPU's a lot better.

    Thank you for the article!

So this may be what Mariana was on about and why the rewrite would be so significant for MC.

Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

    Some good news.....

MC 2019.x coming in the May timeframe as announced at NAB will have a dedicated render and transcode farm, allowing process intensive media tasks ( i.e. GPU and CPU) to be offloaded from the MC application.

    Hey Marianna!

Just wondering if there is any word from AVID on eGPU support with 2019.'x' now that it has been released. I've been googling it but not come across any specific articles or papers on this from AVID that i have found as of yet.

I have a 13" 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar which i was mainly using for email and admin etc... but given the new release and external hardware progression that has been going on, was trying to find out if i can use 2019.'x' on the 13" with an ePGU, or if i need to upgrade the laptop to a 15" model with the second internal graphics card.

    Thanks!

Any updates?  Would like to be able to transcode in the background, but it's unuable without better hardware (2017 Macbook Pro). Looking at the Blackmagic eGPU but haven't found any info that MC can utilise it.

    Would be great.

Re: eGPU Support in the Pipeline?

No updates or plans I'm aware of.

Media Composer still only uses GPU for specific relatime playback performance improvements and not much else. This ensures that the generic functionality and performance is similar over a range of hardware and not handicapped by limited GPU support. I can't see this changing in the near future. But what do I know :-)
