Hello, we want to buy a custom build MacPro 5,1 with Titan XP from www.create.pro.Titan XP was not made specifically for mac so they provide custom cables to power it. They say the Titan is not flashed, it is standard. My question is: will Media Composer work fine in this configuration?
If it's just a "regular" Titan, why don't you get it from the manufacturer or an online retailer? It'll be cheaper. The power cable can be found on eBay for just a few bucks.
Anyway, I'm beside the point. I have a GTX 980Ti flashed for Mac, but it still requires the Nvidia drivers to work. I'm noticiing a lot of interface glitches, especially when using Full Screen Display - tearing after a cut, or on quick pans. Issues that are absolutely not present when I put my "old" GPU instead, a Radeon R9 280X - flashed for Mac AND with built in drivers.
I love the extra power from the NVidia, it really delivers in apps using GPU like Resolve - transcoding went up from 40fps to 65fps! But I'm a bit disappointed by the results with the other apps and the extra complications (like when an OS update is available and it breaks the drivers compatibility).
Thanks a lot for the info!
So you think that using an amd like RX560 4GB that didint actually came with this mac is better?
I might try a GTX 1080 myself to see if it irons out the issues I'm having with the 980Ti.
An AMD sounds like a good option, especially as Apple has been using them for a while. People have been recommending the Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB because it's basically the very same card that Apple sells in their eGPU kit. Also, early adopters found out that the RX Vega series have native support in 10.13 High Sierra - which will be released later today. It's a bit early for us Avid users as no version of MC is approved yet, but by the time your new computer is up and running, we should be good.
The only problem with these cards is that the prices are insane at the moment, with people thinking they can make lots of money "mining" with them. It should clear in a few months though.
First-hand experience: AMD RX 580 (reference model) works. Using it in a MacPro5,1.

Unfortunately, it looks like all the reference models are being snatched up.
If you do find one, make sure you get this dual 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe cable.

Ask me about Mimiq and Mimiq Pro!
Nice!
What OS are you using?

pierreh:What OS are you using?
macOS 10.12.6.

About that dual 6-pin to 8-pin cable: forgot to mention, that's for power. If you don't get that cable, your Mac Pro will shut down mid-operation during a GPU-heavy task.
We upgraded our 5.1 to a 1080 and it has certainly delayed the inevitable. Like you we got our card courtesy of Create Pro, very helpful people and they'll supply all the right cables you need.
But even though the machine has a new lease of life there are issues. Firstly, this is not plug and play. You have to seek out and instal the right drivers. Also updating the OS can require switching back your previous card to do the installation then updating the drivers before your upgraded card goes back in. So you need to be tech savvy.
Also the card probably won't help playback of AMA files as they tend to use only the CPU to do the decoding.
And be aware that there's no definative guarentee the card will work in future OS updates - but for now (IMHO) you're better off spendING 1k to upgrade and waiting a couple of years to see what he next MacPro has to offer, than splashing out 4k right today.
@jaketheeditor
Jakeheat is right: it's not a straightforward process, it goes agains the legendary "ease of use" of a Mac.
Having said that, I don't know why you need to put the original card back in the Mac. You can activate "Screen Sharing" and log into the Mac from another Mac. Or use Terminal to update the OS as it won't reboot straight away, letting you update the Nvidia drivers before the reboot. But yes, it's not as plug'n play as we'd like it to be.
My 5.1 also has upgraded CPUs. Whilst this is even less easy to do -you have to pull out the processors!- it made a huge improvement to the machine. It's out there with the most powerfull "Trashcan" Macs, with the advantages of the "trucker" Mac Pro.
