Yes. I had a 7940x for a while.. Its a long story but I am getting it exchanged because I broke it (installed it upside down).
So I am using my 7820x that I bought before the 14 core.
I miss that 14 core so *** much. this 8 core is often at 100% (transcoding, and exporting ama). I would never buy the 8 core today. Even my 14 core maxed out every now and then, and for that reason I wish I had an 18 core.
I went with a Geforce 1080 with 8 Gb mem and 64Gb system memory. System screams on transcodes and Using Adobe Media encoder.
do you have one you can recommend?
I have made about 3 different builds essentially just changing out the cpu and Mobo.
I can save a little money with the i7 8700k and the asus rog strix z370 e gaming mobo.
I dont overclock and the only things i have in my pci ex slots are my GPU and my AJA Kona 3G card.
I dont need fancy either I just want something that will work. There seem to be so few people who build or at least have examples of their builds for an avid edit computer that it is hard to make a final decision.
I checked with our hardware team and they responded....
" The processor and memory make up a low end workstation config. This would be good for HD editing. Could choose a higher core i9-79xx for better processing power. No experience with GeForce cards in general (for MC not gaming). Memory has 4 lanes, I would opt for 4 x 8GB DIMMs instead of 2 x 16GB DIMMs.
Check out the HP Z4 G4 config guide for similar specs."

is the 1080 and the 64gb ram upgrade worth the money?
Thank you marianna I really appreciate the response.
I have an 8700k, 7820x, and a broken 7940x that hopefully will be replaced this week. I am telling you, anything other than the 7940x makes me depressed.
Right now a 7820x is definitely not worth it because intel is releasing the 8 core 9900k within a month (its going to have a much higher clock speed than the 7820x.) And finally intel is soldering this cpu rather than using their previous thermal paste which was bad for cpu temp)
When transcoding and exporting you're really going to want more than the 8700k.
My suggestion is first try to finance a 7940x at ava direct using affirm.
My personal opinion is to get more cores, and get a cheaper gpu like a 1050ti.
Everytime you see 14+ core cpu hit 100% (more often than you think) you'll thank that core snob on the forums.
BTW.. anyone reccomending 8gb ram chips, is not taking your wallet into consideration. You will outgrow them, and eventually have to buy larger chips to max out the ram on your motherboard. It definitely is better to fill all the ram slots but get the dual 16 and upgrade later.
I think so. I built this system last year and was a good bang for the buck. I know prices have went up so not sure now. All I know is this system smokes ever other one we have in house, which are all iMacs with 32Gb of memory. I run a Nitris DX and have zero problems editing with this system. Handles Multicam and AMA media (Panasonic AVC Intra 4k from the VariCam LT)
Todd H: is the 1080 and the 64gb ram upgrade worth the money?
depends on what you're doing. in Avid it's primarily for plugins.
in 1080p gtx1060 should suffice. 1070 is a middle ground maybe.
i'd get 2x16GB Ram now, 2x16 in half a year or year when RAM prices hopefully get back to normal.
you want 4 sticks in the long run for max RAM speed.
your cpu is starved for pci-e lanes, 26 instead of 44 of 10 core + models.
a few of the pcie slots on your board probably won't work.
with one gpu and one preview card you should be fine though.
say you are on a budget and have to get the 9900k (my budget reccomendation in a month).
I would get a thunderbolt cabaple version.
I have the strix299-e gaming, and I regret not getting the tuf mkII because that one has thunderbolt capabilities with a card and the strix doesnt.
All these desicions have to have the long game in mind. You may want thunderbolt in the future for a number of reasons... Feel free to direct msg me.
I have the geforce 1080ti... I just don't see a huge difference between it and the 1050ti. Avid has insanely high gpu requirements, and I'm just not seeing the benifit. You can monitor gpu load with gpu-z.
High gpu requirements are good for avid blaming a users specs rather than dodgey programming where rendering doesnt use cpu power.
1300 for the CPU is not really in my ballpark. I am having computer issues right now that are preventing me from getting to my avid. I am also struggling to find work and now with the issues it is more of a struggle because I can not do the work if it happens to pop up.
If I knew I had some work lined up I would go all in but as of right now I need to find something affordable that will work and do what I want. I have battled this loss of power/crashing issue I have for over a year now without being able to solve it or anyone who can. So I am looking to build something that is new and current and can handle what I do...I cant put 5k on a system at the current time which is a bummer.
You are the only one who I have seen speak poorly of the 7820 but maybe I do need to get a better cpu.
I am not speaking poorly of the 7820x. I am just saying that it will be your ceiling/bottleneck at times.
thanks.
Point taken on the RAM.
PCI-E lanes being an issue is a problem. If I am just using the 1060 and the kona 3G I would think it would be okay.
I am currently running an nvidia quadro 4000 and the kona 3g on a Asus Z97-A windows 7 pro 64 bit. I have never had an issue with Avid Media Composer ever nor after effects, Photoshop or Sorensen Squeeze. it just keeps shutting off while running. No lagging no issues just shuts off, restarts and then does it on and off variously. Now it is sometimes not starting and when it does it is crashing up to 8 times before it will run and stay stable for awhile. I have not been able to figure it out or find anyone who can with the error I am getting. I have been through two motherboards, two cpu's and a brand new boot drive and the error continues.
anyway I just need to figure out the best setup that wont break me financially but will run without issues.
Have you replaced your power supply? That could be it. Also install the program "coretemp" to check your cpu core temps, maybe the cooling isnt seated properly and it could be overheating.
Also a bad overclock could be giving you randoom reboots but it doesnt sound like your overclocking.
Also win7 is old, i'd run win 10 (1703) and the mc 2018.8
I am always redoing my configurations, one day ill put my motherboard in a rack, switch this, that, etc... In less than 90 minutes I can reinstall windows, drivers, quicktime, optimize with asdt, and have a fully stable media composer beast running.
I think you have a bad power supply or overheating.
this is my second corsair 750 watt power supply.
I dont want to buy another one and see if that is the issue. I even sent the first one to corsair and they fixed it and sent it back and did the same thing. I was so frustrated I bought a brand new one and it is still happening. Then I thought my boot drive had an issue and bought a new one and did a fresh install. Still happening. New MOBO and CPU, still happening.
tried it without my kona card installed....still happened.
its just frustrating. I do not want to go to a computer repair place because A I like to fix problems myself and B the issue is so sporatic that I fear that it wont happen to them and then I spend money there that could just be used for a new build.
