No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

Just bought a BlackMagic UltraStudio Pro mainly for grading with DaVinci Resolve. But according to the documentation the BOB should also work with MC 8.

Now the problem is that the UltraStudio Pro works with about anything I throw at it except Media Composer with HDMI output.

I get a black screen. And yes, I checked the setting both of the UltraStudio Pro and MC.

I pick up bits of information from here and there stating that you have to watch out with the driver. I'm on MC 8.6.3 and the highest compatible Desktop Video driver to use would be the 10.7 and as such not the most recent one: 10.8.1.

Anyway, I tried all versions between 10.7 and 10.8.1 and non of them does the trick.

Am I missing something? Do any of you use the UltraStudio Pro with HDMI output succesfully?

    Would appreciate your help.

It is a 1080/50i PAL project, but I checked with at least 5 other types: PAL SD, 1080/25p, etc. Always black screen...

Download the drivers form Avi's website. See if that version works.

I have the UltraStudio SDI and it works.

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

I have little downtime this week but in the meantime I made a Composite and Component connection between the UltraStudio Pro and a monitor and that connection works.

However I don't understand why e.g. Premiere Pro CC and DaVinci Resolve make a HDMI connection in seconds and operate without a glitch on exactly the same projects (which I transferred via AAF).

And there's more. I disconnected the UltrStudio Pro and hooked up a 2nd computer monitor to my system (like most of us do) via HDMI and ran MC. I then instructed MC (via settings - Full Screen Display) to put the full screen display on that 2nd monitor. Guess what? Black screen!

So in my opinion there is definitely something wrong when it comes to using HDMI connections with MC.

I've been using MC with my laptop's HDMI connection for years with no problem.  I've never used any setting in MC for this.  I use the Nvidia contol panel or the Windows display control panel.  I'm not setting up a dual monitor setup, though.  I'm cloning the computer display to the HDMI out.

If I get a chance, I'll try setting up dual monitors to see what happens.

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

You do not get the output through a Blackmagic card by using the full screen option.  That is for getting a full screen picture on a computer screen.

However, if you have got component output you must have it set up correctly.  If the drivers are installed correctly then it should sat Avid media composer - ultraStudio Pro across the top of the Avid program screen.  If you haven't then something is set up incorrectly.

Having said this I have had problems with the Blackmagic USB3 devices and Avid.  They never seem to work properly in the way the PCIe or Thunderbolt devices work.  I have also had problems with the 10.8.1 drivers with Avid, but it works ok if you use the Avid validated ones (which from memory are 10.7.1 with MC8.6.3).

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

The specs of the UltraStudio Pro state that the bob is expecting a YUV signal. Now, could it be that Avid Media Composer is not outputting YUV? Except for the fact that the BM driver might not be ok (which I doubt since e.g. Premiere and DaVinci Resolve are doing ok) this is about the only reason for the problem with MC I see left.

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

I would doubt that Avid is putting out the wrong signal.  I think it is either the drivers (are you using 10.7 which are the ones for MC8.6.3) or the fact that Avid simply does not "get on" with the USB3 Blackmagic devices.

I am a system resellar in the Uk and never recommend using the USB3 devices with Avid because I have had a variety of problems over the years - mainly crashing when scrubbing or playing.  The same devices generally work with Premiere and Resolve ok.  It is not just Avid I have had problems with, however, as EDIUS and Vegas have had problems too with the USB3 devices. You also can get problems using different USB chipsets.

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

I just tried my USB3 Intensity Shuttle - I do not have the UltraStudio Pro here as a demo item - and I cannot get any output from Avid using either 10.7 or 10.8.1, but I do get output in Premiere Pro.  My Avid is also very sluggish.  I am not surprised.  This is pretty much how the USB3 devices always work for me with Avid.

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

I have a USB3 Intensity Shuttle on a laptop that works really well with MC 8.5.3 and driver 10.5.4. The trick is to use a USB3 powered hub of good quality. The only limitations seem to be when capturing I get a framerate mismatch warning even though all settings are correct, dismissing it however allows full capture of 1 hour tapes with no problems, and I can not capture audio only, but this is common to many BM devices and I feed a black and burst ref signal for this purpose. The only capture I use it for is from my JVC BR-HD50 deck which crosconverts to 1080i50 really well from it's HDMI output.

Playback and HDMI I/O works fantastically. I used the Avid provided BM driver which has the added advantage of installing the Fusion plugin, which works great with the free version. The later BM drivers add nothing for these USB3 devices and don't work for me.

I've set up dual monitors (primary-laptop display, secondary-external HDMI) and have used them over the past couple of days and full screen display from MC on the HDMI output has worked fine.

If you're getting a black screen, you may need to check the setting to flip sync.  I think I read someone here on the forum recently having to do that.

I'm assuming that you did set up dual monitors in either the graphics card control panel or the Windows display control panel before trying to get a signal over the external (or extra) HDMI.  Did you do that and did you get a signal on the extra monitor outside of MC first?

Re: No HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro

Thanks for your advice, Scott, but I'm familiar with all that. Don't ask me why but if I don't use the UltraStudio Pro and use the 2nd display via HDMI I have a clean display now. I rebooted the system and it was ok.

However still no solution for HDMI display with UltraStudio Pro (on USB3). I put my question on the BM Forum. I'll keep you posted.
