Hi,
More information on this topic here:
http://community.avid.com/forums/p/133711/813576.aspx#813576
In a nut shell the thread says: As there are no programmable keys on Artist Mix, if you prefer Shift Solo 1 to temporarily (and quickly) disable/enable fader movements, you will need EuControl version 3.2.2 for versions before MC 8.5 (I've tested it on MC7) and 3.3.2 for MC 8.6.1+ (which I've also tested on 8.6.1).
It seems no one realised that the Artist Mix is the only console without soft keys, when they decided to implement the programmable/soft keys in EuC 3.4. (NB, there are two Shift keys on the console, why not make the right hand one the fader disable key? and in the EuControl app have an option for enabling the Artist Mix Fader Disable button - there's a danger of there being too many enables and disables in that last sentence that could produce an unwanted neutralising effect...).
Switching the console off is not an option because it takes soooo incredibly long for it to reconnect to the network and longer still for EuC to even notice and sometimes it won't auto connect, so no, switching the console off is a silly unhelpful idea - nice try ;-)
Hope some of this is usefull,
Jonno

I have ben told that to implement this properly it should be handled as new feature work/request. The team is working on determining the scope to add and should know more soon.
Could you email me directly in 2 weeks and I should have an update for you.

Hi Marianna,
Have you heard any word on this issue?
Will there be/is there a fix specifically for the Artist Mix so we can still easily/quickly disable/enable the fader movement?
Unfortunately, the current driver that retains this function (3.3.2) still has issues with latency and intermittent lack of volume response in playback even though the Avid's GUI Audio Mixer tool reflects the Artist Mix's new fader position (in all versions of MC up to 8.6.1). Current Work-Around: open another sequence and then re-open sequence the volume change was made in and then it plays the newly set volume - in case anyone needed to know.
thanks,
Its a feature request actually and with 8.8.1 coming soon and 8.8.x in the pipeline I dont expect this soon
When do you expect it? I'm considering selling my artist mix if this isn't fixed soon. Some sort of timeframe would be great.
I second that. It's kinda of embarassing having the director on your side and not being able to silent the room for a playback.
The frustation I get from using this panel on MC has a close relation to this, it works well on Protools, but it's really lackluster on the video side of things. I understand video might not be a priority for this panel but still there are quite a few users out there, doing a lot of work. We get very few buttons for the money we paid. Far less than PT users. Premiere, on another hand, makes full use of it, I even get levels.
I wish I could exchange my one for a artist color, at least it would be fairly usefull on Baselight.
Or Avid could make Protools integration with MC so natural, we could flip to PT and use this panel.
Did this ever get fixed?
I've just jumped into this short project on Premiere this week and it's embarassing. All the controls work smoothly while on it, I can change levels while playing back, it works instantly, panning works as well, I get levels on the OLED, etc. It really doesn't make sense. It's like going from a USB 2.0 to 3.0.
Wow. Well on the upside, that will help with its resale value.
Can I join my voice to the many who would very much like to see this feature re-instated.
I find it bazaar that Avid could remove this without a thought for the users - Just as well they don't make cars - I find the parking brake a handy feature in my motor
I also would like this feature reinstated!
Another victim here:
It has been about two years since this 'feature change' disabled a much-needed function. On my current show, I have been forced to adopt a later version of MediaComposer that will not work well with legacy EuControl versions.
And now, the work-around of purchasing an Artist Control or an Artist Transport (for the sole purpose of assigning a soft button to "Motors Off") is no longer available, as these units are no longer sold by AVID (based on a look at the product page today). One could buy a unit used, but if they are no longer sold, soon they will also be End-Of-Life, meaning the work-around may soon be EOL, as well.
Apparently, we now have the sole remaining option of using/purchasing an iPad in order to assign a soft-key. Which means I have to purchase a $350+ "button" that is big, bright, awkward to place on my desk, goes to sleep, and needs an authorization to wake up. Not to mention it may not be on the same network. No fun.
For those of us who have loved and relied upon the Artist Mix on Media Composer, this lack of in-built "motors off" key combination is still an issue that needs resolution. And last I checked, there are no other options for flying-fader automation on MediaComposer.
So what about just adding a "legacy" mode or "MediaComposer mode" checkbox for us in the next version of EuControl? Respectfully and humbly, it seems not too much to ask.
(...or have a I missed news of a fix? Hope dies last!)

I've figured out a workaround for this. It also lets me work around every other weird thing in AVID. Using KEYBOARD MAESTRO I've set up a Macro that I can activate with a hotkey (or on a button on an ipad/iphone if you also implement LEMUR).
When I hit my hotkey (option M), KM does the following:
Moves my mouse over to the project window
activates the settings tab (in case it wasn't already)
scrolls the window to the top (in case it wasn't already)
moves down a set amount of pixels and clicks my controller settings. (I have two of them: one of on and one for off)
clicks the bin tab to show my project structure again
moves my mouse back to it's original position
It does this so fast it's effectively instant. All I really notice is that my mixer has turned on/off. Pretty amazing stuff.
Other cool things I've done with KM Macros:
Change the avid mixer mode from 'CLIP' to 'AUTO'.
Start recording keyframes on the mixer
Adjust clip gain by set amounts
Made 'extend edit' operate intuitively and with a single click
Let me know if you want to see my Macro for this and I'll post it.

Hi, Aren!
I think plenty of people would be interested in seeing the macros and/or a demo, so feel free if you have the time.
Curious: are you experiencing any delay when re-engaging the Eucon connection from Media Composer? In older versions of Media Composer at least it seemed to take a moment to find the Artist Mix again. Wasn't happy with that, but if it's nearly instantaneous now I might consider this (begrudgingly) as a work-around. In my case I would assign buttons on my XKeys24 and create the 'macro' using its own macro programmer called ControllerMate (highly recommended if you prefer dedicated hardware!).
Where this still chafes for me is that whenever I start a new show, I have a slightly different hardware and software environment (different version, different monitor resolutions, etc.), meaning every show would require fidgeting with the distance the virtual mouse travels, possibly even the delays if the given system is slower than the last. I might sound spoiled and whiney, but I consider that a lot of fiddling on the one setup day they give me before starting a season. I'd rather be getting to know the rest of the post crew. Another consideration is that this method interacts with Media Composer, whereas the original on-board key combination didn't involve anything but the Eucon driver. As a result I was able to silence the motors on the Aritst Mix during playback for a director or producer without them noticing. We're not yet on Live Timeline versions on the shows I have been cutting, and even Live Timeline may gack when disengaging Eucon, so the macro / mouse click work-around is still a lesser animal, in my opinion.
And even years later, it irks me that I had this feature once upon a time right there on the Artist hardware, only to have it snatched away. And it would be so easy to restore as an option! Alas...
But your positive-minded solution is bound to help others, so many thanks for posting it in detail! Hopefully some will also check out XKeys by PI Engineering. Assistant Editors especially: there are lots of dailies-prep tasks you can automate with it and turn into muscle memory!
