URGENT: Video and Audio Doesn't Play...but frames (video) & waveforms show up

    Hi,

These technical issues on getting my editing project started are killing me...  I've got Avid Xpress Pro 5.2.4 on PC (Win XP HE).  I've already digitized all of my media and have them loaded in Avid.  The video is DV 25 411 OMF, and the audio is digitized as WAV files but hasn't yet been loaded into Avid, except for a few test files which is when I discovered the problems.  I have problems with both video and audio:

For video: I can use the keyboard arrows to scroll through the frames, timecode is nicely in sync with the frames, etc.  But if i hit play, either in the pop-up source window or if I drag it to the timeline, it doesn't play.  The timecode progresses, but the image stays the same, until you stop the play, then it shows whatever last frame it ended on.

For audio: I see the VU audio meters reacting to the audio, and I can see the waveform of the clip when I drag it to the timeline.  However, I hear nothing, though again the timecode progresses.  Interestingly: if I turn the reference beep tone on at the timeline window, I CAN hear this.  I've played with every possible combination in Audio Settings, but can't figure it out.  I opened my sound card's mixer window and put it side-by-side with Avid, and if I highlight the sound card mixer window all of the volume controls jump to the top and are unmuted, but by simply clicking on the Avid window, all of these soundcard mixer sliders drop down and most of them click on mute.  I also notice: under "Sound Card Configuration" it says my soundcard name in the bottom left: "nVidia nForce Audio", but on the "Audio Project Settings" on the hardware tab, it says for Card "DirectSound Audio & 1394 Audio", Peripheral "Avid WinOHCI", Slot # "0", Sync Mode "Internal".  This seems to suggest it is listing something different than my actual sound card.

Please help!  :)  I need to edit asap.

Re: URGENT: Video and Audio Doesn't Play...but frames (video) & waveforms show up

    Bump / Update:

Ok...i had the infameous Power Scheme issue warning when starting up Avid, and by fixing this (creating and applying a new power scheme in Win XP that sets everything to "Never", including my uninterruptible power supply UPS), my video problems are no more.

However, my audio problems are still as described above.  I get no more warnings of any sort from Avid, but I think it has to do with that "DirectSound Audio & 1394 Audio" reference described above.

Please help...this is my last issue preventing me from editing.

    Derek,

I don't know if this will apply to your audio card, but give this a try...

My system has a SoundMax audio card, and the Avid mutes the card on startup.

The workaround is to open up your volume control on the desktop before launching into AXP.

After you start AXP, click on the volume control.   When Avid gets to Initializing Audio, see if your sound card gets muted.  If that happens, just click all the mute buttons to turn the audio back on (be sure to do this while Avid is still launching.

(There is a setting somewhere in the Audio settings to override the mute on startup.  Sorry, I'm not near my Avid right now, but if you search around you should find it.)

    Hope this helps....  Good luck.

Re: URGENT: Video and Audio Doesn't Play...but frames (video) & waveforms show up

That didn't seem to work, but after struggling all morning, I've got it working.

2 notes on my configuration: 1) My sound output is going out of a SPDIF fiber optic connection to my receiver and then my speakers, allowing true HQ 5.1 Dolby surround sound. 2) my nForce 2 nVidia sound card built in to my motherboard reports using a Realtek codec, and there has been some other posts regarding realtek problems on this forum but those other posts didn't seem to apply to me.

    So, here's what I did:

Under "Audio Project" settings:  On the "output" tab, I put the gain and the master volume both to the top...this way I can use my external (receiver) speaker volume control.  I also left it set to "stereo" and made sure none of the bypasses were selected.

Under "Sound Card Configuration" settings: I set "Stereo Mix" to "Wave", and under "Override Sources" I selected "Wave" and "SPDIF".  I made sure "Use Windows Mixer" was not selected, though in my opinion if this selection would work and you were able to hand control of audio back to the system, things would be far better.  However, as it is, Avid takes control and gives you limited control.  At any rate, if I had selected that "user windows mixer" option, it doesn't seem to work, as I get no audio then.

So, it works.  It isn't straight forward, as is the case with most Avid technology.

I am still concerned that under "audio project" settings on the "hardware" tab it says it says my card is "DirectSound Audio & 1394 Audio".  If anyone has any more info on this it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'm off to sync my video to my audio...finally.  Thanks for the reply.

Re: URGENT: Video and Audio Doesn't Play...but frames (video) & waveforms show up

    Hey.

I have the exact same problem.

I'm running on Vista with compatibility set to Windows XP.

I get the "power-scheme" dialog at the beginning - even though I setuped a power-scheme with everything set to "never".

Everything else seem to be working properly - except this thing :\

I'm on a quad cpu with 2.40Ghz and NVidia GeForce 8800 video card.

    Any help will be appreciated...
