I just purchased my Symphony upgrade. In addition to the $299, I was charged $22.05 in "Estimate Tax." On my previous 2 upgrades purchased directly from Avid (6 to 6.5 and 6.5 to 7.0) I was not charged tax. I have never been charged sales tax on software upgrades from other companies (Sorenson, etc.) I live in NY and the only time I've been charged sales tax is when I purchased my original Avid license from a NY retailer (Videoguys). Isn't Avid still is Massachusetts???
I have a fantastic editing assistant. He stays by my side when I edit...doesn't talk too much...and thinks I'm a genius! Check him out here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQVkYaaPO6g
I'd take that up with Arvato Systems (who run the store) http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/FAQ/Avid-Web-Store-Who-is-arvato-Systems.
Thanks. I submitted a request form. Ironic that they don't have a "support" telephone number you can call for issues regarding the purchase of "support contract."
I do not live in US and I shouldn't be charged with extra tax, buying from Avid is a true mess. I've been involved with much smaller companies that handle things like this better. It's like a marketing scam with hidden costs!
How do I get the extra tax payment back? It's impossible for me to book this payment with a 19% tax! It shouldn't even be there!
64 bit, GPU acceleration, better AMA, better exports with GPU acceleration, better grading with true secondary and lift gamma gain, higher resolutions (4K, 5K etc.) and a video stream online (for directors being far away on the phone or skype).
That would blow ANY competition away and it will be future-proof MC for a long time.

In the confirmation email, to the bottom left, there is a link ("other questions") that brings you to the Webstore Support. There you can file for a VAT refund.
Avid Store FAQ That FAQ says: Can I order using a tax exemption number? We happily honor tax-exempt status if you are eligible for a tax exemption. Please contact our Web Store Support team for assistance. I followed that and asked for a VAT refund via the form on this page. I also clicked the link for the survey, and I think anyone reading this may have an idea as to how I rated them.

Job ter Burg:I'd take that up with Arvato Systems (who run the store)
I filled out the support request form a couple of days ago. So far, Avrato Systems has been unresponsive and have not contacted me and there is no way to contact them. Again, it's ironic they have no telephone number to support their selling of a "support" contract.
It may be more trouble than it's worth to try to get a refund on the tax, but I simply want an answer to the question of why Avid (based in Massachusetts) charges sales tax if I don't live in that state? They did not do this on previous upgrades and other software companies don't do this...unless you live in the state where they are based. If they are doing this to everyone, that's a lot of $$$ that may or may not have been legitimately collected.
