Re: Stuff I wish they'd fix

Oh yes agree with most of those. The v6 windows are a pain (in that they expand to expose nothing).

    - Find clip in Interplay

    - option to not add .transfer to transferred sequence

    - please be as clever as you are transferring as when laying to tape and don't render underlying effects if the top layer is already a render file

    - speed up rendering of AVC-Intra (particularly Boris). This pig of a codec is spedified in DPP delivery here in UK, so it isn't going away.

    - ensure that the 'all tracks centred' bug is gone forever (still seeing it in v6.5.3)

    - allow more (custom) sequence bin columns to be shown in timecode burn in - and exchange that metadata with EVS (i.e. we get a lot of metadata EVS->AVID but it's tapeid or sequence name & timecode only going AVID->EVS

    - add metadata to describe audio tracks (now we get 16 tracks of audio from EVS, which should be full mix 2.0 / fx only 2.0 / full mix 5.1 / fx only 5.1 - but can be anything really & it'd be great if they could be logged just once)

    - fix the 5.1 bugs that have come over from PT (do a 5.1 mixdown and watch your SMPTE order tracks be swapped to 'Film' order, ditto for rendering an audiosuite plug-in)

    - the subcap tool / timecode generator could be used as a quick and clean text tool if the kerning/rendering was improved. (still v useful for quick & dirty)

this is all v6.5.3 and below... haven't seen v7 yet

The one thing I get frustrated with is the inability to edit the audio sub-frame, with very quick fade-outs or fade-ins to lose clicks or bits of words.

Here comes the broken record . . .Please allow user option to restore simple effects keyframes and keyframe editor to pre-V5 model.

Please allow for removal of smart tool from the interface at the user's discretion.

Please allow me to totally remap my keyboard so that command/control can be remapped to pre-V5 model.

Re: Stuff I wish they'd fix

    - "Back to the future" - Make it more like Discreet edit* where there is only "editing" and no need to switch between "modes" like insert, overwrite, segment, trim, F/X, etc.  In edit* this was all determined automagically by the program through context.  If you clicked near a select a cut point and start trimming, or with a simple modifier (like shift click) and you were editing the transition FX.  Click-n-hold the center of the clip, and you entered what Avid calls segment editing and you could drag the clip anywhere on the timeline you wanted it, and with a simple modifier make the drag operation a ripple/insert or overight. Insert / overwrite from the source player was simply a different key stroke.  Click an FX icon on a clip and you were editing the effect.  The point is, there are ways to really streamline the editing process by eliminating "mode" buttons and tools that can easily be invoked contextually without editors having to explicitly activate the mode before defining the edit they want to make.

    - greatly simplify keyboard mapping of modifier keys (e.g. shift, alt, ctrl).  If you click on the shift / alt / ctrl key, it stays highlighted on the keyboard map, and you can drag your selected tool / cmd buttons to the desired key. Click it again to deselect it.  Provide an option to print a pictoral keyboard mapping for each state (normal, shift, alt) as a personal quick-reference card set.

    - Mrquee could use a good updating too, including fixing the settings save so that markers are saved with a workspace setting and do not have to be reactivated on each Marquee invocation.  Update the 3D title controls in Marquee, and perhaps bring them into consistency with AvidFX and / or MC's built in 3D FX control interface.

    - How about "Open Bin in New Tab"?  I miss super-bin, and though I can get to the tabbed bin presentation, I have to open the  new bin, then drag it to an existing bin window... Why was it changed from 1-step to 2-wtep operation?

    - How about a tabbed timeline window so I can have multiple sequences open at once.  It makes "try and decide" operations, and build-up of complex sequences from smaller sequences much easier and faster than having to open / close sequences to edit between the two when it is more complicated than simple cut/paste.

All simple stuff, but could simplify and speed up the editing process.

Re: Stuff I wish they'd fix

Here is my broken record addition as it comes to effects:

Avid owns an amazing product called Avid DS.  It's effect architecture, while dated in the lack of no true 3D (not stereo) compositing space, is vastly superior in quality, power, depth and capability over MC / Symphony.  The knowledge is available in house for Avid.

And another DS feature that is sorely lacking in MC / Symphony is render management.  Once something is rendered in DS, those renders are "seen" by any sequence or part of a sequence that would have such a result.  MC barely remembers that it rendered something at all by comparison.

Down load the FREE education version of DS.  Play with it.  Ask questions of the users.  Then let Avid know what they have.

I would add DPX file support.

I'm not sure what the resistance has been.  It's obviously an industry standard.

Kind of like ProTools not supporting WAV files.

I prefer most of it not to be consider as feature requests. The bulk of my original list is current or past existing functionality that is incomplete or out of date. I'm aiming for updating and improving existing functionality, mostly. Too many features that have been orphaned after a first rude pass.

But you're right, it's not the right subforum here.

Also, edited my original list to reflect the difference between feature requests and incomplete functionality.

Plus an additional note: I'm thinking actual editing functionality, as required in our everyday lives.

That, to me, would all need to be part of a completion of Universal Mastering.

    TVJohn:

An applet in the utilities folder like Liquid had to "benchmark" certain important GPU functions. Comparing card names vs a txt list as a qualifier is something of a copout.

Not really an editing feature, I think that is a valid request for another thread, though.

    Good list job!

    A few more anoying things from my standpoint;

-rebuild the pan & zoom FX from the ground, allowing rotation and keying/animatte.

-Or expand the frameflex possibilities with options for keying, rotation, etc.

-give us a option to disable the warning 'insufficient source material to make this edit'

-The new editable audio keyframes are so time consuming in selecting/deselecting keyframes

-Fix a bug in the automation gain mode; sometimes it doesn't save the mixing randomly.

    -source side vfx

    -deinterlacing options like swapping fileds.

    duplicated mediafiles detection
Could be tricky, with people having transcodes of the same clip on a single system, no?

Well this belongs to the ABVB days, when 3 GB disks where the disks, and shared storage was science fiction, I'm glad You were not around at the time: it means that You're younger than me, good for You :)), the thing was not about duplicate or multiple captures/transcodes/consolidates, it was about duplicated files, like when moving external drives between different systems with subsequent updates on both ends, a scenario in which You could easily end up with two istances the same file residing on two partitions/disks, today it could be in a "1" and a "2" Avid MediaFiles\MXF subfolder on the same disk or on multiple drives, Avid used to index the hard drives at startup, detecting duplicated files and asking how to manage them; media files indexing has been rewritten a few times ever since, but having back a "dupe detector" feature, perhaps along with the refresh media directory command would be nice IMHO.

    Job ter Burg:
Your FR about alphabetically listing parameters I would file under rethinking the effects altogether. Simply alphabetizing the parameters I would not find enough.
Rethinking the effects is a matter that belongs to the feature requests, to stay on topic and fixing the existing features having the effect's parameters alphabetically listed should be quite easy to achieve without a total rewrite of the effect editor while dramatically improving usability and ergonomics, in the meanwhile Avid could take the time to redo the effects to bring them into the 21st century.

Re: Stuff I wish they'd fix

    1. Have an option to not show a dialog box before rendering an effect. I know I want to render the effect, which is why I just chose to render it and I've already selected the drive for the effect to be rendered to, so I don't need this annoying dialog box that's just one more thing for me to have to click on. I'm sure some people love it, so just just give us the option to disable this confirmation.

    2. Have an option to delete orphaned precomputes upon exit. These files just take up drive space, and after MC is exited, they are not going to be utilized by Undo.

    3. Have saved timeline views include the zoom level of the timeline. I have one view for audio syncing, but everytime I load a new clip to sync, the zoom level reverts to some system default setting.

    4. Have Full Screen Playback be able to play outside of the application frame.

    5. Make image processing 32-bit float.

    6. Ability to drag an item from an open bin and drop it into a bin in the Bins tab of the Project Window [edited for clarity]. Presently you can only drop an item directly into a bin that is already open.

    7. When I have a folder selected and create a new bin, create that bin inside the selected folder.

    8. Shortcut key to create a new folder.

    9. Ability to detach the Bins tab from the Project Window.

    10. Allow trimming past subclips' intial boundaries.
