Hello,
I am a student and I recently purchased Composer 6.5. I don't understand why I can't find AvidDVD/ Sonic. I can't find it in my program or applications. I was under the impression the software came with my purchase but right now I don't understand how to burn dvds. Is it a separate download? What am I missing?
Thanks!
Hi,
Shena:Is it a separate download?
Yes, it is. If you login to the Download Center you'll find it there:
http://www.avid.com/us/support/downloads
And if you need a serial number once you've downloaded, go here:

Shena:I recently purchased Composer 6.5.
Just so you know, Media Composer 7.0 was released a few weeks ago, and as a student you get free upgrades for four years. More info here:
http://www.avid.com/US/support/upgrade-academic-free
Hope that helps.
ciao,Carl

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
You're welcome! :)
Hello Again,
I've tried these links several times. I am eligable for the free upgrade and found the download, but no matter what I do, my computer will not recognize the files. I click on the dmg and all it does is open a zip file. If I click on the zip file it just opens another zip. If I tried to extract it manually, it just gives the error "not recognized". It is the same for the Sonic download. I have been trying to do this for a week. I can't even figure out were in support I would contact. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Shena:I click on the dmg
Shena,I downloaded the Avid DVD by Sonic download from the download Centre, as Carl suggested, just now. There is no dmg file there!
I thought that a dmg file was a MAC thing.Avid DVD does not run on MACs, only PCs
Are you sure you got a dmg file?Did you download the correct file?

That may be true for Sonic but the 7.0 update is for mac and it doesnt work either. So if Sonic doesnt work for mac, how do I burn dvd's?
Shena:That may be true for Sonic but the 7.0 update is for mac
I take it that by "7" you mean MC/Symphony 7.If so, then I believe that Avid DVD (by Sonic) is a separate download, at the Download Centre, where Carl referred you to.That file is for PCs only.
There is no Avid DVD for the MAC platform.
Shena:So if Sonic doesnt work for mac, how do I burn dvd's?
I am sure that someone who uses a MAC will give you some advice here soon.
Regards,Douglas
One other point that is worth knowing, Shena
Avid DVD by Sonic is a rebranded version of Sonic Solutions/Roxio DVDitPro HD.Sonic Solutions/Roxio DVDitProHD is no longer! It was axed about a year ago by Rovi, the company that acquired Sonic a few years ago.So I would not put in a lot of effort trying to get it.You are definitely going to get better results finding a standalone MAC application.
OK. So I learned there is no DVD authoring for MAC. Thank you! I will look into other options.
As far as the upgrade, I am eligable to upgrade from MC 6.5 to 7 just as he said, but I when I downloaded the file it won't open. It says not recognized. I put in all the proper codes and was directed to the download page. I checked my permissions for the HD. Not sure what to do.
THANKS!
I keep having afterthoughts on this one. Here I am again.
You said that you have never burned a DVD before. When you are searching for a MAC application, one thing you should check - that will make life easier for you - is "does the application accept Quicktime Reference files"
The easiest way of getting a timeline from MC out to a DVD authoring application is through a QT-reference file.
Take a look in your MC user guide to find out what a QT reference file is.
Ok. Thank you so much for your help! I was getting really frustrated.
