Fun new DS tutorial: Retro Glissen

Updated July, 14th: The tutorial is also available at:

Remember those gold metallic logos from 20+ years ago? Many were aribrushed and animated by hand. That's exactly what you'll see in this new DS tutorial--how to make a retro glissen.

Normally I upload the tutorials to Vimeo, but there is a glitch at the moment. However, if you're dying to see it, even though the video podcast quality on my website is not as good as Vimeo, go to the bottom of

For the newcomers, there are three places you can view these DS tutorials. You can:

    - go to the Tips and Tutorials section of Avid Community and look under DS (good quality

    - go to Post Magazine website (good quality)

    - go to my website linked above

Instead of viewing the tutorials in Tips and Tutorials, you can click through and go straight to Vimeo which will give you full picture quality instead of playing in a little box. The .m4v tutorials on my site are not the best quality, but they are available for viewing right there all in one place, or you can subscrive to the podcast by searching for "avid DS" in iTunes.

Re: Fun new DS tutorial: Retro Glissen

Igor, this takes me way back. We used to put "glints" on type, logos etc., back in the late 80s when I was doing motion graphics in a one-inch bay at ABC in LA. Graphics created on a Paint Box included mattes for the face, edge and extrusion. We would E-Mem-animate heavily-modulated switcher wipes in a cycle or a loop.

The technique you use can still be relevant today for people lacking a decent 3D tool.
