Hi All,
I searched for this, but couldn't find something specific to this problem. We're running fully qualified machines with Windows 7 64-bit for the OS. Symphony version 6 and 6.5's across four suites. The issue is the same on all of them.
Normally we do our photo moves outside of Avid and then import an MOV, but recently we've needed to do more quick and dirty versions using Avid Pan and Zoom. Our problem is, it seems Pan and Zoom is broken. When we click Import Image, it lets us select the picture and then brings nothing into the effect leaving just a black screen.
All our settings are what they should be, with our view set to Target and not Source so we should be seeing the image (have tried it the other way around to test with no avail). I know something changed in Pan and Zoom with v6, but is anyone having this issue or does anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks!
Z
Did you apply the P&Z effect to a clip?
I usually import the picture using the regular old import method, drop it in the timeline (so I can see what the file sis supposed to be) and then apply the P&Z and point to the original.

Thanks for the response Kevin. That's exactly our workflow. For roughing out the edit we import the image and lay it in the sequence. Then we put the effect on top of the image (also so future editors can see what image to point to) and import the original through Pan and Zoom. It's the same workflow I've been using for years in MC, but now it just gives us a black screen. No idea what's changed, and it's happening across all our edit suites.
What kind of file are you using? What's the size?
Are you using images that are in a Shared folder? This has been an issue in the past on Windows systems
That fixed my problem here on Windows.
Thanks everyone, the file is a JPG and is about 1.5MB. Not a huge file by any means.
I hadn't heard of the shared folder aspect. I'll try moving it form our shared imports folder to the desktop for a test. Thanks!
Hi - I have the exact same problem. I run 7.0.3 on an iMac. (10.8.5, 3.4 ghz Intel Core 7) Pan and Zoom started showing black screens, even for those that were previously visible. Set to Target, imported still underneath the effect, drawing from a non-shared file. Argh.
I can use Avid FX I guess as a workaround, but a pain when replacing scratch stills that have old successful pan and zoom moves on them that I want to replicate by copying and pasting the effect.
It just quit on me. Strange.
I'm sure that after a years you've solved your problem, but I thought I'd leave this here for posterity, as I stumbled onto this thread trying to solve this exact same same issue in media composer 8 on my macro tower...
turns out the issue seems to be with my internal raid (disk array set to raid0) where I usually store my media! I tried moving the picture to an external raid (g-drive FireWire raid also set to raid0) and voila everything working as it should! I'm sure this would also be true if I had moved my file to my system drive.
not sure why this is, but it is...
Thanks! I think it was just last year I posted that, and no, I haven't solved it yet, I've been doing work arounds that are a pain. I'm not sure if your solution will help though, as my stills are already on an external drive. The Raid drive part of it I'm not sure about... especially if they are both set to Raid0, which, I confess, I don't really know what that means... But thanks!
ps: and now I'm remembering that you can do the same in Avid fx, which is what I've been doing ... so maybe Avid in its wisdom has just left pan and zoom to die in the wild.
Please keep it alive!! I use Pan & Zoom almost every day! Of course I'm still working on the Version of Symphony - 4.05 - before everything got broken. But still, if I do upgrade, Pan & Zoom is a fast & easy solution for moving stills.
WWLD?
PAN & ZOOM doesn't seem to like 2 things:
1 - Images with long filenames, and
2 - Images that are buried in a deep folder structure (images in a folder inside a folder inside a folder...)
Have an image that's called 123 inside a folder called ABC. Place that folder in various locations to see if you can get the plug in to work. If you can get this to work, you know that it's probably an issue with one of the above two issues.
(And follow Kevin's advice about not using the Desktop.)
Neil.
P&Z likes to use the original file - but i can not be moved. EVER.
just like doing animation in Marquee Tool (which is a bit superior for Motion Control photo work)
you can work on the X, Y & Z axis...plus many other benefits!
AVID will look for that file & if its not where it orginally came from, or the name has been modified - it freaks out.

I had a similar issue with macpro avids not seeing the image (black screen) but windows systems seeing it. Was only occurring on images from one particular source. Messed around quite abit but in the end it seemed to be whatever way the jpg was encoded at their end. I reapplied bit depth, colour space and resaved the files in photoshop and they were then fine in avid. Bit late to the game i know!
